PSU choice help

Alex Balls
Go to solution Solved by Alinz,

I don't know what you will be paying for those units, but they are not the greatest PSU's.

If I check local pricing I can get a Corsair CM650 650w 80plus Gold fully modular PSU for under the price of the Corsair CV750.

The CM650 is a better overal PSU, and should suit your needs nicely.

Fully modular PSU's aren't necesarry, but they help with cable management and are a nice to have (but a must for me personally)

So I'm upgrading my build on somewhat of a budget, I'm planning on upgrading to an RX6700 XT 12GB and a ryzen 5 5500 and a new motherboard. Right now i'm running a GTX 1070 and an i5-7600 with a 650W power supply which is 80+ Silver Rated (FSP raider 2 if that means anything I bought this PC pre-owned)

I'm wondering if I will need to upgrade and if so I wanna do it fairly cheaply. My two main options are:

The Cooler Master MWE White 750W 80PLUS (standard) Power Supply non-modular

The Corsair CV750 750W Power Supply 80PLUS Bronze non-modular

My questions are: Should I upgrade? Which power supply should I choose? Is a modular power supply better/needed? Is the Corsair worth the extra 10 bucks for the 80PLUS bronze?

Also any tips for upgrading would also be greatly appreciated thank you :)))

OOT, but I'd suggest to at least get 5600, or 5600g if you want it to be even cheaper.

Or get the 12100F, it must be around the same price as the 5500, 5500 is not a good buy.

As for the PSU, I think an upgrade would be better, that PSU is definitely old and not good, and it will be powering a somewhat power hungry GPU.

Also, are you sure those are the cheapest you could find? There are lot of similarly priced PSUs that are somewhat better than those choices, however, between the 2, the cooler master is the better quality unit (if it is the V2).

Hey man thanks for the response, the whole reason I am wanting to upgrade was to get a higher wattage PSU, AMD recommends 600W for the GPU as a minimum, are you sure a 650W could still suffice? Again I'm completely clueless but if that PSU is cheaper and 650 is enough I'm sure it'd be great

Hey man, thanks for the tip od the CPU, I'll have a think about it, both of those for me are around $100AUD for me the cheapest i could find although I have just found a Thermaltake Litepower GEN2 750W Power Supply thats about 85 bucks although i'm not sure if it's 80plus certified

Yeah, it will work nicely. You could go 750w if you want a tad more future proofing

You just give it a try with this PSU. It's a pretty decent unit, the same as a be quite! Pure Power 10. ACRF+DC-DC and I don't expect it to have issues with a 6700 XT.
