B150 PC MATE question

If I was building around an old B150 PC MATE motherboard, what CPU and drive could I max out with? It's an LGA 1151 socket right? So would the fastest CPU be an i7 7700K or an I-9900K? Or is the latter incompatible despite the same socket? And the latest BIOS update on this motherboard says it has NVMe support. Does that mean I could use an NVMe PCIe adapter with like a Samsung 980 and get decent speeds or is it just a waste? I tried to research it myself but I'm seeing conflicting info and not a lot of information altogether since it's older. Thought maybe somebody that had this motherboard in the past or is familiar with it could guide me properly so that I didn't purchase something that didn't work.

Yes, because Intel. Also that motherboard has a very weak VRM, so I wouldn't trust running a high core count Coffee Lake on there anyway. There are ways to bypass that restriction with BIOS modding, but they're finicky, Error prone, and not worth it for a super low end motherboard (if you had something like a Z170 Hero or OC Formula it might be worth while trying it, but a low end B150 board is not since an 8700K would likely power throttle like crazy).

What is the goal?

 

100 series boards are 6th and 7th gen only.

 

A 7700k is around 150 still which is more than better used ryzen cpus + a board.

 

If its for gaming sell the b150 and move to a used ryzen base as the 7700k isnt gonna be relevant for much longer but something like a 2600 and up is.

 

As for ssd yeah you can do that. Dont know why since you wont notice the difference between a fast sata drive or fast nvme.

 

But depending on usecase I can offer advicr so if you can provide that info it would be great.

It's just the parts that I currently have and I'm trying to get through another year before making a massive upgrade. So you're saying that I shouldn't even bother with an NVMe. I do some mild gaming and even a little video editing on this thing so every little bit would help. But if you think real world performance would be negligible then I'll just stick to getting a SATA SSD. Probably way more cost-effective for a larger one.

 

I wouldn't want to go Ryzen because then there's the possibility for needing a new PSU and memory, etc. I was still using hard drives so for $50 upgrading to an SSD can make a world of difference. The rest of the system is pretty much maxed out with a GTX 980 and 32 GB of memory.

ryzen on am4 is still ddr4.

 

You have a 7700k or 9900k laying around?

Yes 7700K So I'm not sure if it'll even make that much of a difference
