Hello everyone,

I plan to build a small server rack (~12U) to house my homelab, and in the future a custom router and switch, and potentially some other components too.

Regarding small server racks, I was wondering are there any good ones in that form-factor, that are soundproof and don't break the bank?

I am kinda sensitive to loud sounds, and since the small server-rack will be placed in the same room that I work and also sleep, I started looking into soundproof/noise-reducing cabinets.

The only ones I could find, were over 2000$, which is insane.

Are there any, that are more affordable, and still provide decent noise-reduction/soundproofing?

I haven't seen any that are sound proof at all. Just some that reduce sound. You can usually do this by adding sound absorbing material to the walls in the cabinet.

The downside of this though is you cut off air flow which is bad.

If you want something that can be not as loud, the best bet is to use 3 or 4u machines and swap the fans for quite ones from Noctua or similar.

Thanks for the reply. So, any cheap cabinet will do, as long as I pick larger fans, and optionally add some soundproofing material myself if necessary?

Are there any 12u racks/cabinets you can recommend?
