A new rumor suggests Google Maps will soon receive an update to its user interface.According to the Google Operating System blog (not an official Google channel), the left-hand sidebar is getting the boot in favor of clickable menus along the top portion of the map. The new setup is allegedly designed with mobile users in mind.

The left sidebar has long remained the primary interface point on Google Maps, focusing on navigational components and location-specific searches. Based on the supposed leaked images, the overall appearance of the update opens up more real estate on the map screen. You can also restrict your search to local attractions, based on reviews and recommendations from Google+ friends.

Icons will also receive a visual upgrade, and at first glance, map text appears easier to read. There's no word on when the alleged update will go live, but Google is hosting its I/O conference May 15 through 17.

I'm up for a UI overhaul on mobile. It's already super easy to use but if this makes it more intuitive and adds more features, I'm all for it.
