Budget (including currency): Around 500€

Country: France (Reunion)

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Occasional gaming, moderate video and photo editing

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Hi, I'm wanting to upgrade parts from my PC who is giving me a hard time lately. I would like to upgrade the CPU and motherboard :

- coming from : Ryzen 5 1600 (and MSI B350 Tomahawk)

- would like : Ryzen 5 5600 / Core i5 12500/12600

The thing is, I would like to know if it is a good idea to go for an AM4 build since I saw AM5 is already out (it's been a while since I tracked the evolution of hardware) ? If it is not, would it be a better one to go for an Intel 12th gen (but I saw the 12600 is way more expensive than a R5 5600). So I am a bit lost, I would like some help to know what would be wiser.

Also, if I go for a 12th gen Intel CPU, I can still use my 2x8GB of DDR4 I already have, right ?

Lastly, I would like to go for a smaller form factor, and I like the design of Thermaltake's The Tower 100. As I understand it, I can fit my standard ATX 500w power supply in this case, right ?

Thanks very much for your time.

Well, with 500EUR best thing you can do is to get a 5800X3D, switching to AM5 is 700EUR+ (full replacement CPU+board+DDR5 RAM) for not much more performance

Same with going Intel, you can keep your DDR4 RAM but the additional board price makes the deals not very good, as you need a 400EUR 13600K to really gain something better than a 5800X3D, then buy a 150EUR+ new board ...

Regarding the PSU in a TT Tower 100 it seems it accepts ATX PSU (as per pcp compatibility) as long as they're <180mm long

The 3D doesn't offer anything extra in video and photo editing either though, no?

Maybe the 12th gen would offer more, but that depends, because right now they have AM4 motherboard so upgrading AMD CPU is less pricy, if their MB can handle the new CPU.

And would OP even benefit from 12th gen memory bandwidth?

  2. Ryzen 3 1200 3,5Ghz / OC:4Ghz | 8GB DDR4 2133Mhz / 16GB 3200Mhz | B450 | GTX 1050

Thanks for the answers!

Yeah I forgot to mention, 500€ is for both the CPU and the MB, because mine is ATX and I would like to switch to a smaller form factor. That's why I was considering either a R5 5600 + MB or a 12600 + MB.

On Intel side, nothing below a 12600K beats a 5800X3D, but as OP already has an AM4 board I thought he'll be saving money on a 5800X3D

Now he wants to also buy a new board to get a ITX one, so then a 12600K is a good option. Idk his RAM speed, but it shouldn't make a big difference
