I am currently tossing up between an AM4 or AM5 build. I feel that a shiney new Ryzen 7 5800X3D build will last me another 5/6 years and by then I can have this spiral again about AM5 or AM6. But for now, is there a reason I should go AM5 instead?

Higher performance at a reasonable price point.

 

If you are going to wait for the 7000X3D, you will have the opportunity to also evaluate the new locked 13th gen Intel offerings.

New i5 is simply better in workloads compared to what AMD can offer for that money, gaming tho different story and since you've said you want a CPU that can do everything (equally well) then the new unlocked i5 is a nobrainer or even locked i5/i7 chip. Team red is still an option just 7700X is way more expensive and perform slightly worse or on par, depends on the application.

 

Purely for gaming 58003D or upcoming 7000's3D.
