https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/H310M-S2H-rev-10/support#support-cpu - the motherboard doesn't mention i7-700k but the socket is 1151

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07BKK9LHR/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=A6W81PBMJ3F61&psc=1 - on amazon it says its lga775 and ddr3, im pretty sure this is the exact same motherboard ?

apparently the motherboard is not compatible intel i7-700k? but the socket is 1151.

I'm really confused, can someone tell me if they would work?

Correct. It's not compatible.

The physical socket is the same, but some pins were moved around and reassigned for Coffee Lake. That broke backward-compatibility with Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs.

Thank you so much for the response!

No, these are not compatible. CPUs need to have the right socket on the motherboard, but also the right chipset. The H310 chipset is only compatible with CPUs from intel's 8th and 9th generation - ie. i7 8700k, 9700k, not the 7th gen CPU you have there. I also would not recommend using such a low tier motherboard with a high tier CPU - it may work, but with worse performance if it struggles to deliver enough power, and the motherboard's power delivery circuit may not be able to handle the power the CPU draws, leading to a much shorter lifespan for the motherboard - as in, a year or even potentially less

Okay, thank you for helping.

Ive heard of some people being able to run coffee lake on 100 and 200 series boards with a bios mod, dont think anyones tried it backwards cause why would you

But i did find this thread and now that just brings more questions for me, pretty similar mod to 771 -> 775 on the copper tape shenanigans atleast on the cpu itself but grounding a pin on the super i/o so the board turns on? Do new boards really just not turn on without the cpu installed? On all this old hardware i can start up w/o cpu no problem

The only threads I've been able to find about that say it's on specific motherboards, and the BIOS has to be flashed with a chip programmer. (Probably to add the 7th and 8th gen CPUs to the whitelist in a way the fail-safes in the normal BIOS flashing process would stop.)

I didn't want to muddy things even more by opening that can of worms.
