Greetings,

I will be investing in a new headset at the end of next month and I would like to get some opinions on which to buy, specially from those of you that have owned multiple headsets or tested out the ones that I am looking at getting.

I have looked at a few headsets so far and currently am leaning towards the Corsair Vengeance 1500. I have also looked at the Razer Kraken 7.1.

What I would like to know from you is what your opinion is of the best headset to get within that price range? I do realize that both those headsets mentioned above are USB headsets, but that is perfect for me since I don't have a sound card and if I was running analog I would be using my onboard audio. I currently own a pair of Tt Shockspins that are not the most comfortable after long periods of use, so comfort is a key factor for me. Some other factors I would like opinions on is mic quality and the quality of the surround sound as well as build quality of the overall product.

Thank you in advance!

Hd 558 *very comfortable could be bass heavy at times if you adjust your setting* and modmic *not the best mic quality but hey does the job

I'm gonna echo the opinion of getting a proper set of cans and add a mic for best possible sound. As for 7.1, how many ears do you have? Two. Stereo is best for listening to music on headphones. You shouldn't have to rely on surround sound trickery. The following is stereo, but you are clearly aware from which side the sounds are coming from.

I will mostly be using the headset for gaming so positional audio is something that does matter.

It's for gaming, virtual surround can improve positioning in game audio. Binaural applies to recorded sound, not a mix like in a game. The 'number of ears' thing really is a non sequitur.

good pair of stereo headphones will be way better than 7.1 of equal price. even in positional audio.

you can always download the razer surround thingy.

@Redrock If you want a decent headset id get the Mionix Nash 20. Great sound quality and mic quality. They are EQ'ed flat and not so bass heavy like most gaming headsets. They are an excellent headset and this is coming from an audiophile. :D Try to stay away from USB and that virtual 7.1 surround sound, it's not very good and USB headsets dont produce the best sound. Thats why you dont see audiophile headphones being USB...ever :D

If not, I would agree with other people and say the Sennheiser HD558's but I'd wait until the Antlion Modmic 4.0 is released.

I think you guys are making excuses to blow cash on things with "gaming" printed on it. One of my buddies is FPS obsessed and is quite good..his sound is cheap and that doesn't stop him from getting headshots.

Skill > gaming headset

Yes, higher audio does make experience more enjoyable. My point was that for enjoying audio, a proper set of stereo headphones does wonders. Don't mind me, I'm just stubborn and would put music above game sound effects when it comes to audio. :P

Though..those Steelseries Siberia elites..those do look comfy.

Go for Pioneer SE-A1000 or Sennheiser 518 with a zalman clip on, modmic, or blue snowflake/snowball. The 518 are a bit bassier but is less comfortable for big heads. The Pioneers have bigger cups that are more comfortable for bigger heads.

A decent headset will def help. I used to play at high levels of CS and now I'm getting back into cs:go and being able to hear everything is absolutely essential. If your playing at the highest level, every little bit helps, especially being able to hear footsteps. So yes I agree that skill trumps pretty much everything, but if you back that skill up with solid hardware it'll make a big difference. Positional audio is what your looking for so I'm gonna give a +1 for the sennheisers. If you can find 558's on sale i'd jump on that, otherwise 518 should do just fine.

If you need virtual surround, you don't need to buy a multi-driver/speaker headset. Just run it through the software (Such as that of a sound card or motherboard with good audio)/
