Kindle Fire HD

I made the mistake of getting a Kindle Fire HD instead of a Nexus 7.... i know i know..... not smart.

anyway, I could go on and on about how useless this kindle fire os is but if I could I would like to get some input

as to people that may have a kindle fire hd. Basically I'd love to be able to use a tablet as a remote for my HTPC that is running xbmc.

So I have a few questions...

- any cool apps on the fire hd (probably no on this)

- am I going to have to root this device to make it useful (probably yes)

- any good rooting guides for version 7.3.1

- also, cant get my device to detect on usb on my pc.. any advice on this
