Hi just wondering about some info about adding a GPU inside or outsite my home server.
I already looked into what i would need and it would be something around the lines of a 2060.
But i wondered into the enclosure of my server just to find out there are no power leads for any kind of GPU cables
Is it safe to use a flexible riser and use the card externally using an other psu just for the GPU power ?
And if so would something like a 500W PSU corsair be enouth ?
Asking mainly cause i think i heard some time ago that it could give issues with power sync or something

Thanks already
Laynord

Its a server ( DELL R630 (1U )) so it cant fit a classic 2 slot GPU this much i understood so i need to rise it outside
I would like to run a vm on the server for a pc cause i only have a laptop and its starting to get old and buggy
I think that using the server would give me a better experience on games rn
With like some RDP on lan

What cpu is in there? These usually came with the lower end xeons.

Also that case needs to stay closed at all time otherwise that server is going to overheat. You cannot break the seal of the top panel even with a hole in it.

Honestly with all the setup, cutting and sketchy stuff needed Id say set aside 500 and get yourself a used gaming pc. Its gonna be flat out better and far more stable.

What are the specs from the laptop?

It has 2xE5-2683 and 384 G of ram and like 6T total storage on a raid array
I was thinking of passing the riser through one of the pcie brackets behind knowing 2 are not used
The laptop has a i5 9300H
a 1050
8 G of ram
and some HDD that is dying down

That cpu is gonna have a hard time holding 60fps in games due to its weak single core performance.

The way the pcie ports are set up in the r630 you'll have to find a VERY flexible pcie riser because its gonna be very easy to tear a riser cable by doing such a bend for ones that arent meant for it.

Then psu wise a QUALITY unit is important. A cx450 is about 50$ if ya can find it. Bridge the 2 psu pins with a connector for it and it will power on permanently.

As for the laptop just add an ssd instead of that crappy hdd and watch it fly again.

But there is not problems of power sync or some deep technical stuff that could fuck up the gpu power between the pcie slot and external psu ?

Will the performance of the processor be worse than the laptop ?

Unless the r630 has the 35w slot limit (its printed on the board go check that) then there wont be problems

You're not going to make a gaming VM on that server that's going to give you a better experience than your laptop in its prime. Start with a new storage drive and clean Windows install for the laptop. You might be surprised how badly a marginal boot drive can kneecap performance.

Adding a GPU like a Tesla P4 to the server would make sense for Plex, though.

Yes, significantly. The server has more cores, but the laptop's cores are faster.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.
