I'm trying to learn more about subnetting and came across the following which confused me.

So, a Class A which is 255.0.0.0 or /8 can have 16,777,214 hosts and 0 subnets, at least that's what a chart I have shows. Yet, I've always known that Class A can have 127 networks. Am I confusing the terms subnet and network, as I always thought they meant the same as in dividing up the IP addresses into different networks/subnets? If they are actually different, then I'm really confused.

Classful addressing has been long dead in the real world but still sticks around in theory most of the time, these days everything is classless meaning you can cut any network into any number of subnets provided you follow the rules of doing so (largest subnets to smallest)

As for the term, network and subnet, at least in my experience, can be used interchangeably.

For example, "the 10.0.1.0/24 network" or subnet is fine to say.
