Plex/NAS Upgrade

mydrum9

I'm coming from a WD 4TB My Cloud Pro Series PR2100 and I'm looking to upgrade this to something more. I noticed a few videos were done in the last few months about this. What would be the recommendation right now. I'm willing to build something or purchase a NAS. My main thing is I want to be able to pull from the plex server offsite, so hardware transcoding is important to me.

What kind of transcoding are you going to do?  4k to 720? or such?

My nas (synology 1821+) could do 2 1080 to 720 transcodes, but that's about it.

Plex Server: Dell OptiPlex 7010 /  i7-13700 /  32GB DDR5 / 1TB Samsung  990 Pro / Ubuntu

Laptop: M2 Macbook Air / 8G ram / 8core CPU / 10core GPU / 512GB SSD

NAS: Synology 1821+ , 2x Synology RS819 = 200TB

Well should I even be looking at prebuilt or build something on my own?

Depends on your budget.  there is the qnap tvs-872xt that can supposedly do multiple 4k transcodes. If I had to replace my current unit I'd be doing research into this one.

See as how transcoding is important to you, then building would seem to be the most cost effective.  The cpu doesn't need to be a high end cpu, you can pair it with something like a quadro p2200 and it'll do a few 4k to 720 transcodes if needed (when I had my server with the p2200 i once had 4 4k->720 going at once without issue).
