Hello everyone,
I hope you're having a nice day 🙂

Lately I have been playing CPU heavy games (i.e. Timberborn, Infraspace, Cities: Skylines) and I'm thinking about upgrading my CPU. I also use my PC for some .NET/python development so I'd get the benefit in other ways too.

Hi, I'm currently running:
ASUS PRIME B550-PLUS
Ryzen 5 3600
RX 5700 XT
32GB 3600 MHz RAM

Would Ryzen 9 5900X make sense with these components?
Should I consider getting a better motherboard for it? Should I consider a lower end CPU instead?

What I have available:

CPU Price (CZK) Converted (USD)
AMD Ryzen 3 4100 2,559.00 CZK $100.70
AMD Ryzen 5 4500 2,990.00 CZK $117.66
AMD Ryzen 5 5500 3,290.00 CZK $129.46
AMD Ryzen 5 5600 4,290.00 CZK $168.81
AMD Ryzen 5 5600G 4,090.00 CZK $160.94
AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 5,490.00 CZK $216.03
AMD Ryzen 7 5700G 6,790.00 CZK $267.19
AMD Ryzen 7 5700X 6,990.00 CZK $275.06
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 7,990.00 CZK $314.41
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D 11,990.00 CZK $471.81
AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 10,990.00 CZK $432.46
AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 15,390.00 CZK $605.60

Cheers

Best perf overall => 5900X

Best perf/price => 5700X

However pls confirm you play 1080p, else the you will (or may already) be GPU bound

Go with 5800X3D for CPU intensive gaming, it should also be plenty for your usecase and will perform better than the 5900x in a lot of scenarios. I'm not sure how much of the cpu is used for .NET and python though, if you test now and see all your cores/threads running at 95%+ then the 5900x would make more sense, but if not, the 5800X3D will be more powerful.

The Ryzen 7 5700X is almost half the price of the 5900X. since it's both a single thread and multi thread improvement over your 3600, it would be a fairly substantial upgrade. A much better value.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

Seconded the 5700x, seems to be the best balance between high performance for the price, 5800x3d is too expensive for a mid tier gaming build. 5900x is great but too overkill.

Occassionaly visits the forum when I have nothing to do at work.

Been using it with 1080p 75Hz display. But I got a 1440p 165Hz display recently. If you have a good recommendation for GPU upgrade I'm listening. I prefer AMD but if you have an argument for Nvidia that justifies the hassle in Linux I'll consider it.

That said, I'm mostly playing e-sport titles and city/economy building sims. I didn't really feel GPU bound but I'm likely not using the full potential of my new display.

In this case i'd wait the new RX7000 series due to launch in a few month

If you were more eager to upgrade soon, a 6900XT is currently a quite good deal in the US, you can get one at $700

OK I'll wait then unless I start playing some GPU demanding game. TYVM
