I suppose the fastest gaming CPU could also be the fastest number crunching CPU, I don't know if there is any difference, but I remember in one of LTT's Intel Extreme Upgrade video specifically for his accountant I think, he picked an 12700K or something, he said he needed an extremely fast CPU for his accounting work, which calculates tons of numbers and formulas.

This one.

That really depends on the application. Is it single-threaded or multi-threaded?

For single threaded, you might want to find a CPU that has higher clock speed. For multi-threaded, CPU with more threads is ideal, but depends on how well the software can utilise the threads available.

I'm no expert on this, but I can say the current generation Core i5 from Intel or Ryzen 5 from AMD (5600 or 5600X) is good, but if you run multiple programs at once, maybe you can consider Core i7 or Ryzen 7. Heard Ryzen 7 5800X3D performs well in single-threaded computation, but well, I can't say for sure, because depending on the software you're using as well as the method of calculation, the requirements can really be unique.

I'm not sure, but GPU can outperform a CPU in number crunching as well. Crypto Mining is one of the application that excels when using a GPU instead of CPU.

So, this is probably a specific case scenario than general one. You may want to invest time to know your mathematical software better.
