$700-800 PC build budget help

jmg3195

1. Budget & Location

$700-800 USA

2. Aim

Replace my terrible laptop preferably with something much faster. I may use it to game at some point although I just got a steam deck a few months ago. Things that I'll be running steam games (mix of games), web browsing, download managers, winpinator, Microsoft office, maybe Photoshop at some point.

3. Monitors

I'd say I'll be using 2 monitors probably 1080p for now

4. Peripherals

Already have a keyboard and mouse that will work for now. I would need a case though.

5. Why are you upgrading

My current computer is a Dell Inspiron 5570 laptop with a 1TB hard drive, 12G ram, and an Intel i3-8130U CPU. This laptop is terrible and has been since I bought it. It's the slowest computer and has no USB C ports. I hate it and would like to never use it again as it can't even handle basic tasks like browsing the internet half the time. I've never built a PC nor do I know anything about building PCs, however I think it's something I should be able to manage doing.

Any and all recommendations are greatly appreciated! Complete newbie with zero knowledge on this stuff.

The hard drive is why. Swap in an SSD and it's fine.

Do these (and a mouse/keeb) need to be included in the PC price? Or is the budget for just the tower.

The budget is just for the tower 🙂 and I thought about upgrading my laptop to an SSD with 32G ram (might be overboard) and the Intel i3 12100F but I wasn't sure if it would be better to just build a PC instead

Can't upgrade the CPU in... really any normal laptop. That RAM would be overkill, you would literally just need an SSD and that's all. I'd recommend doing that if you wanna keep the laptop for mobile use still, you can get a cheap 250GB SSD for like $30 these days. On the desktop PC front, +1 for that list from @PDifolco.

Just wanted to let you know I bought all this except I upgraded the SSD to 1TB and chose a different power supply. But I built it last night and I love it! It's a billion times better than my laptop thanks again for your help!
