BIOS update versus instability

This is a topic that has crossed my mind quite a bit in recent days, but I can't recall having seen anyone discuss it. One of the very common suggestions when dealing with instability of any sort is to update your BIOS to resolve the issue. That is, assuming it isn't from a known hardware fault. On the other side of the coin, BIOS updates are a bit sensitive and can result in bricking the device (or at the very least require BIOS recovery) if done incorrectly and/or power is lost.

 

My question is this: Is there a tipping point where the system's stability is so precarious that one wouldn't even try to update the BIOS, for fear of itself becoming corrupt?

 

To be clear, I'm not deathly afraid of updating a BIOS, but it seems it should at least be considered in some edge cases. I'm curious to hear others' thoughts on this.
