I bought a new case, power supply and a Corsair H55 water cooler. I had everything installed the system powered up fine. Was plugging back in USB devices and it just shut off. PC had been powered on for ~5 mins. I attempted to power it on again and nothing. Tried the paper clip method which confirmed it was dead. The green LED on the case was still on even though it wouldn't power up. Assume the 12v rail had died?

Anyone else had this happen? For a power supply that was brand new and worked for just 5 MINUTES!! It doesn't fill me with confidence with CM power supplies, this being my first.

I'll just add that i'm using my old Corsair power supply which works without any problems. I had already filed an RMA with the retailer i bought it from. Just wondering what the likely reason is for the failure. Green LED was still on when dead PSU was in. So is it a problem with the 12v rail?

Have now ordered myself a 630W be quiet! Pure Power L8 Modular PSU. The dead one is on its way back, i am getting a refund for it as i don't trust CM no more. Plus be quiet! seem to be a bit more reputable.

While it is unfortunate that you received a defective PSU, the G550M certainly isn't a bad PSU that would fail within minutes, so you shouldn't just "trust CM no more" due to this one failure (refer to the link below). It is a good DC-DC regulated PSU that had been made by Channel Well Tech, one of the OEM that makes most PSUs for Corsair. CM recently had a new PSU manager, in which since then they had been releasing some excellent PSUs such as the Cooler Master V series which had been based on the Seasonic KM3 design.

Nonetheless, the BeQuiet! Pure Power L8 is also a good budget unit if you are looking for something is silent. But to give you something to read regarding DOAs and failures, read this post: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/141659-bought-a-rm750-but-i-am-scared-now/#entry1891429
