looking for laptop recommendations for going back to school but also gaming capable, around $1000 or less. Starting my first year of college and I want a possibly gaming laptop to use for college. An important thing for me though is looks, I do not want a "gamer" looking laptop. A sleek and thin laptop that is gaming capable would be the best for me, with also decent build quality. I don't really plan on playing triple A games or hard to run games, and I don't expect a beast laptop at around $1000.

The Victus from HP has an anti-gamer aesthetic which I love about mine, it's like smooth matte black with gloss V logo that's NOT backlit, and it just has a simple white backlit keyboard, no RGB. Next to a MacBook pro 2019: it looks hella gamer. Next to a GAMING SUPER OC RGB XTREME laptop, it could pass for a dell precision laptop. Can get with 12450H or 5600H/5800H and a 1650, 3050, or 3050ti. I have mine with 5800H and 3050ti and it's exactly what I was looking for an got a good deal on it. It is a plastic shell, but it's "budget" gaming.

I saw it online, then went to see it in person at my local microcenter and I was sold immediately. The 5800H does get toasty and can reach thermal limits in a warm room, but the 3050ti stays frigid at about 70C under heavy load. Key stabilization is good for being membrane, and it does only have a 250/300nit screen, but it's 144hz and unless you are outside on a really sunny day it's plenty bright. The color accuracy isnt particularly great, 255 green is more like key lime and 255 blue is pretty washed out, but the 255 red appears to be pretty damn close.

Yellow looks good, same with cyan and grey, magenta is more pink than magenta. So would not recommend as photo editing.

batttery life is heavily dependent on workload, office tasks is about 3hrs with 5800H and 3050ti with fans on auto heavy use is probably between 45min-1hr. they really should have put a slightly bugger battery in it, but its fine for the price. comes with 200W power brick as well.

would also recommend the 2yr accidental from HP as well if you want a longer warranty, the accidental damage gets you white glove service. having used it: its worth it for overnight air shipping to and from and a comparable loaner if it is going to be an extended repair.
