WD WD5000AAKS dead?

My friend gave me his Western Digital WD5000AAKS to get a file off of it, since he couldn't. I got home, plugged it in, and it spins up. So what's the problem? It sounds like it tries to do a seek test or something, it spins down for a few, spins back up, seeks, down, up, seek, off. Will this take professional recovery, or is it just dead?

Is it detected in the bios/disk management?

Kinda. It sees it, but it says something about the disk not being recognized or failing or something like that.

did you do a chkdsk to see how many sectors failed?

I don't think I could. The drive would shut down after 3 or so tries of trying to do its seek test.

Well its not dead if its spinning up. Was it working when your friend gave it to you?

He said that he couldn't get it to boot Windows or access it.

If the file on the drive is that critical you can try this, but I think what you are describing is that hard drive interface board is dead, not the entire HDD itself Luckily, HDD's are cheap :D

I think I'll have him send it in to the pros, just to be safe. I don't want him to get the wrong PCB (like firmware), so I guess he'll have to live with this. :(
