Hi,

My girlfriend's dad passed away some time ago and we found his old NAS.

It's a Synology DS207 with 2 internal HDD's. I'm not quite sure which ones, I haven't opened it up yet.

I would love to be able to access the files on this NAS as there might be old pictures, videos, etc.

I have no clue how this works and I could use some help.

I plugged in the unit to an ethernet port on my PC and I downloaded Synology Assistant and it does show up.

I've attached a screenshot but blurred out my IP and MAC adress.

I'd like to be able to access the files via file explorer on my Windows PC.

Can anyone help me out with this?

Keep in mind that I have no idea what i'm doing so explain like i'm 5 :))

Here's the manual for it.

It says there should be a disk alongside the NAS to install the software. Here is the download in case you don't have the disk anymore 🙂

EDIT: Silly me, didn't read the second part at all 😄

You should just be able to mount the volume to windows now so you can see all the files. I don't understand any of the text in the assistant though so it's hard to assist further.

Google Translate tells me that it failed to connect, double check the ethernet connection from the NAS to your LAN.

It could just be a problem with Synology Assistant, try and use  find.synology.com  to find the NAS, it has a nice web interface.

Those have a web interface, by default it's on port 5001. Navigate to http://[the Synology's IP address]:5001 in the browser of your choice.

If you don't remember the login credentials, here are Synology's instructions for resetting the default admin login:

https://kb.synology.com/en-ph/DSM/tutorial/How_do_I_log_in_if_I_forgot_the_admin_password

You should be able to see the Synology advertising its shares on your network in the Network browser. If not, you can try going to \\[the Synology's IP address]\ and see if any shares appear. You will probably need known login credentials to access the files.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

I downloaded the .pat file from the Synology website but i'm not quite sure what to do with it. Also I don't have ethernet in my room so I just have the ethernet cable from the NAS connected to the motherboard? Do you think this will work?

I don't know exactly, temporarily take the NAS to your router and connect it with an ethernet cable if you can to rule that out.

If you have a switch then you can connect your existing ethernet cable to it, and use two other ethernet cables to connect to your PC and NAS respectively.

I don't have an ethernet cable long enough to reach my router, I'm fairly sure it's connected though. The greed LAN LED is blinking, according to Synology's website that means it is connected.

It's also now showing up in the network tab in file explorer. However it won't open.

This guide shows how to set up a direct connection

https://nascompares.com/answer/can-i-connect-synology-diskstation-nas-directly-to-a-pc-or-mac/#:~:text=NAS means network attached storage,directly%2C you can do it.

But it's probably quicker and easier to just go plug it into your router if you can.

Aaah, so it doesn't need to be connect to my PC at all? I can just leave it in another room with my router?

Okay cool! Try this:

Right click 'This PC' and then 'Map network drive',

assign the drive a letter, doesn't matter what you choose.

The 'Folder' section should be something like \\PapaVelle

Hit finish and fingers crossed there's no password.

Yeah exactly, as long as both your NAS and PC are connected to the router then it will work.

See there's the problem, my PC is connected over WIFI. The drive isn't showing up in the network folder anymore.

When plugged straight into the PC the status, disk1 and disk2 LED's also lit up green, now connected to the router they're out.

It takes a little while to boot up. Disk LEDs should have nothing to do with where the NAS is connected.

Do you think I'd be able to view the files normally in the windows file explorer? It's kind off a janky way to do it via the media player.

Yes, you can map the drive.
