Hi All,

I've just been thinking about CPUs lately but intel's naming has really confused me, what is currently the latest i7 cpus that are out to by for gaming, is it the 4770k? and also when is it predicted for newer cpus to come out?

I've checked their site but the 4770k isn't even listed. I see Intel® Core™ i7-4760HQ listed and nothing over 2.7ghz http://www.intel.co.uk/content/www/uk/en/processors/core/core-i7-processor.html

It mentions that these are 4th gen i7, are the 5th gen coming out soon?

This. If your wondering why, it's cheaper, overclocks well, performs pretty much on par with the i7 in respect to GAMING.

If your working with cpu intensive applications like editing/designing software then get the i7, otherwise for gaming the i5 is the most suitable choice.

I also have no clue when next gen processors are coming out :(

Is it worth buying an intel 4770k right now or has it been so long since this came out that a new one is imminent?

There will always be a new part that will one-up the current gen. You shouldn't get the 4770k for gaming not for that reason but because the 4670k performs pretty much just as well and costs less.

I know that is the case, but buying something that will be replaced in 2-3 weeks with something better is different to buying a CPU that will be replaced after 6-12 months. A bit like wanting the latest smartphone to buy an galaxy s3 and then a week later a s4 comes out, you'd feel like a right numpty ^^

Well the Haswell refresh is being released on May 11th. Devils Canyon however is supposedly releasing mid-year.

Maybe worth waiting till the 11th then it's not that far off to see what comes out?

If you're not in a hurry, sure.
