I have a laptop that has 8GB of ram (2 GB taken by igpu so technically 6GB)

And now I want to upgrade cuz I'm getting kinda sick of not using my web browser

The motherboard has a max of 12 GB (4GB Soldered)

But it says that mixing ram size is going to be worse than not mixing???

8GB>12GB??

I need help

Also i don't know which brand of ram to pair with the soldered ram

You will be fine if you use different capacities of RAM, go ahead with the 4 + 8 config.

You can buy any stick you get, just be sure to match the frequency for both. You haven't listed any specs so can't tell what the frequency for the one you have installed is.

I am getting pretty fucking sick and tired of the "watch something else" responses. It's such a cop out answer because you could say that about basically anything, and it doesn't address the actual complaints. People use it as some kind of card they pull when they can't actually respond to the criticism raised but they still feel like they need to defend some company/person. If you don't like this thread then stop reading it. See how stupid it is? It's basically like telling someone "shut the fuck up". It's not a clever responsive, it doesn't address anything said, and it is rude.

Does the soldered RAM have any kind of indication as to what it might be? Serial number, part number?

How do i check that?

Download CPU-Z from CPUID.com, and then in the SPD tab it should say what ram are installed in the different slots, and then buy something as close to it as possible in regards of speed an timing. Ideally you should get the exact same but with higher capacity, but that isn't always an option.

I myself run a 4+8 config on my laptop for the exact same reason, and it works just fine.

It will run dual channel up to 8GB an then single for the last four

That is exactly what I did to my Acer Swift 3. 4GB soldered, added 8 making it 12GB - 2GB for the APU.

Shame the laptop manufacturers put slow ram. My VEGA iGPU runs at the slower ram speed than the 8GB 3200MHz I put in, since RAM runs at lowest common denominator. VEGA 8 performance lost due to slower ram now. Could have used those extra 5fps.

That's an old story which dual channels requires two exactly same memory sticks.

Modern technology is quite flexible, which allows memory sticks with different capacity and frequency, since more than ten years ago.

The only thing is that two memory sticks will run at the lower frequency between two sticks

Ah alright, slot 1 is the normal sodimm ram (module manuf is sk hynix)

Slot 2 is blank (Is that where the soldered ram is?)

What are the capacity of the one in slot one? because that  sounds like there are 8GB soldered and no second stick. If thats the case you may have to get s 4GB stick

Can you provide a screenshot og CPU-Z? both the Memory and SPD tab

And it will also be helpful to know the exact model of your laptop. Model number are usually printed on the bottom of the laptop.

Since my country doesn't use amazon, I'll find a 2400 mhz version of that same thing

Or should i get the same ram that's installed in my laptop (8 gb version of course)

I recommend getting as close to the same as possible. It will default to the speed and timing for slowest of the two, so getting a 2400mhz stick means you will reduce the speed for the soldered as well.

You could try to search for that model number (‎KVR26S19S8/8) in the stores in your country to see if its available.

The soldered stick is 2400 mhz, so nothing will change

Yes, sorry. I just saw that the one in slot 1 was 2666 CL19, but I see it runs at 2400 CL18.

My bad
