Hello everyone. Im a long time Linus Youtube watcher. Im not a tech nerd but I know enough to get myself into a lot of trouble which is why im here. My current PC is almost 3 years old so im looking to upgrade some of the hardware in it. Im hoping someone can help me answer some questions. Im looking to spend maybe $1500 +/- to upgrade. I spend about 10-14 hours per day working and my PC is extremely important to me. Currently I primarily use AutoCAD which is a single-core software as well as Revit which can use multi-cores. I do a tremendous amount of multi-tasking with multiple programs as I work.

QUESTIONS

  • I was thinking about upgrading from my existing Ryzen 9 3900x to the Ryzen 9 5950x.
    • Ive installed a processor before, but it was around 10+ years ago. If I ordered the 5950 and installed it myself, am I ok to simply just replace the chip without doing anything else on the software end? My existing computer is much more expensive than the one I was playing with 10+ years ago. I monitor my CPU usage and I noticed in autocad that when my CPU gets to 20%, my computer completely bogs down and its almost impossible to use autocad. This happens frequently and im desperately trying to avoid this happening.
    • I looked up the Ryzen 9 5950 on Amazon and for some reason the 3950x is MORE expensive than this card by like $300. Any idea why? Maybe its due to availability?

  • If I upgraded my Ram, what Ram specifically would you recommend for the new proposed setup? I Currently have 64 Gigs of Ram and was thinking of going to 128. Im not sure this is worth it but wanted to ask.

  • I currently have an AMD Radeon Pro WX7100 Card. Im not sure it matters but I have dual Monitors with my primary monitor being a 48" LG Ultra Wide with a resolution of 5120x1440 and my second monitor is a Samsung 4K curved 32".
    • I've never been happy with this card. Is there a card that you would recommend to replace this that is compatible with my system?

FYI: I have my PC slightly overclocked using AMDs Ryzen Master. I am currently running it at 4050 Mhz on all 12 Cores which seems to be pretty stable and my last cinebench benchmark was around 19,000 for Multi-Core.

Thank You Guys so much. I appreciate any input.

Nick

I would say go with a 5900x since although it’s a drop in core count, it’s about 150 dollar drop from the 5950x and 150 dollars for slightly more performance and a few more cores isn’t worth it and 12 corses should be able to handle your uses since it still has a very high core count and still a very good chip for multitasking. Then for the gpu, this may be overkill but it will last at least 6-10 years without upgrading, if you want more vram then you should get this 6950xt:https://www.newegg.com/asrock-radeon-rx-6950-xt-rx6950xt-ocf-16g/p/N82E16814930073?Item=N82E16814930073&nm_mc=AFC-RAN-COM&cm_mmc=AFC-RAN-COM&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=afc-PCPartPicker&AFFID=2558510&AFFNAME=PCPartPicker&ACRID=1&ASID=https%3a%2f%2fpcpartpicker.com%2f&ranMID=44583&ranEAID=2558510&ranSiteID=8BacdVP0GFs-v301A9d9BpbMZ0uTWz0TTQ or for more performance with still a good amount of vram, this 3080 ti:https://www.newegg.com/gigabyte-geforce-rtx-3080-ti-gv-n308tgaming-oc-12gd/p/N82E16814932436?Item=N82E16814932436&nm_mc=AFC-RAN-COM&cm_mmc=AFC-RAN-COM&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=afc-PCPartPicker&AFFID=2558510&AFFNAME=PCPartPicker&ACRID=1&ASID=https%3a%2f%2fpcpartpicker.com%2f&ranMID=44583&ranEAID=2558510&ranSiteID=8BacdVP0GFs-138BoDbnij1otCAqbMhsoQ

If Revit CPU rendering is important then the 5950X is the logical choice. Otherwise the 5900X or even 5800X make more sense. They generally perform as well or better than the 5950X in most Revit tasks.

The 3950X is likely more expensive because it is older tech that no longer has to compete for market share.

If you would be replacing 4x16GB memory, look for a 4x32GB DDR4-3600 CL16 kit the is on the motherboard or memory QVL. If you have a 2x32GB memory kit you will want to upgrade with a 2nd identical kit.

Probably more than you want to spend, but an RTX A4000 would be a decent GPU upgrade.

You have not mentioned storage. Are you using NVMe drives? If so how many? If not, you need to upgrade storage.

What CPU cooler is being used? Do you plan to reuse it?

Windows 10 is pretty good at handling significant hardware changes. Nevertheless I would suggest a complete backup before starting the upgrade.

Thank You so much for the input 🙂 I will look at both of these.

Response: I dont do much "Rendering" per se. Its mostly just regular modeling in 2D/3D. Maybe I will go with whichever one has better single core performance.

The 3950X is likely more expensive because it is older tech that no longer has to compete for market share.

Response: Thanks. This makes more sense.

Response: Yes, I have 4 sticks of Ram right now so I will go with the 4x32GB DDR4, as suggested.

Probably more than you want to spend, but an RTX A4000 would be a decent GPU upgrade.

Response: I dont mind spending the money if its worth it. From what I can tell, these are around $900-$1100

You have not mentioned storage. Are you using NVMe drives? If so how many? If not, you need to upgrade storage.

Response: Yes, the drives are NVMe. I currently have (1) GIGABYTE GP-ASM2NE6200TTTD (2TB), and the same one in (1TB).

What CPU cooler is being used? Do you plan to reuse it?

Response: From what I can tell through the case window, I have something similar to a Kraken X53 240mm liquid cooler.

Windows 10 is pretty good at handling significant hardware changes. Nevertheless I would suggest a complete backup before starting the upgrade.

See https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Revit-2021---AMD-Ryzen-5000-Series-CPU-Performance-2031/ for some hard numbers to compare the 5000X cpu. With the exception of rendering, 5800X, t900X and 59t0X have essential the same Revit performance.

Not sure what you are expecting. The memory is not on the motherboard's Matisse memory QVL.

Im just making sure the RAM and Card would be compatible. I selected the RAM based on a previous comment above so I did not think it would be an issue. In summary, Im just asking for a specific suggestion to upgrade from 64GB to 128GB, preferably with a Newegg or Amazon Link because theres always so many options.

I could find no indication that the Corsair kit was compatible. It likely is, but I like to be sure.

G.Skill has good compatibility information. They have a number of kits that would do. I've listed two.

Hi everyone. I took everyone's advice above and bought the RX 6950xt and the suggested 120GB of RAM.

I know neither of my new installs (Ram & Graphics Card) has much of an impact on Cinebench but I wanted to put some stress on my machine so I ran a Cinebench for both Single & Multi-Core. Everything went fine with Multi-Core but im pretty sure I got a BSOD or at least a crash for the SINGLE CORE test because my computer restarted itself and there were some errors in event viewer saying there was an unexpected system shutdown.

The RX 6950 XT seems to take quite a bit of power so im wondering if the issue could be with my power supply? I currently have a Corsair AX1000. Any ideas on a better test to perform  that would help me narrow this down?
