Thoughts

CPU- 12gen E-cores are a plus. Not going to OC, so dont need K model, and intergrated graphics arent needed but nice to have ig.

CPU cooler- Dont exactly want to go AIO, and the fuma 2 is fast and quiet.

MOBO- Dont need z690, not going to OC. PrimeB660M-a is a good looking mATX.

RAM- 32gb for efficiency in editing/rendering. 3200 Cl16 bc 3600 dont really need, and apparently no noticeable difference.

SSD- want a fast ssd, could go 980 pro for a bit more. Dont need more than 1tb, could even drop down to 512gb.

HDD- 2tb, dont need alot, but still 7200rpm for better speeds than a 5600rpm.

GPU- 3060ti better than majority of other nvidia cards. Dont need anything above that really.

Case- o11 air mini is a nice *smaller* form-factor case. Fits where i would have it.

PSU- 650w b/c the 3060ti isn't as much of a power hungry beast as the later cards. *cough* 3090 *cough*

Case Fans- 140x2 120x3 Noctua fans. The case comes with 2 140's and 1 120, so only need 2 140's for bottom intake, then 3 120's for top exhaust.

Monitor Stand- Already have 24" 1080, so using that along with a new monitor would be nice.

Monitor- Top of the line for content creation, and also good for gaming so no need to upgrade for a while.

Headset + keyboard- Quality headphones, good for the price. cherry mx brown switches on a nicely priced board is a plus.

Advice appreciated 🙂

looks fine to me. All the parts are fine. The only thing I could think of is maybe a bit more vram, but it will still be fine. If you want to upgrade to more vram, the 6700xt or 3060 would be around the same performance wise, but just more headroom.

You may want to look into getting a 500GB SATA SSD for cache files. Those can add up quite quickly and you wouldn't want to have them just sitting in your project folder.

Did you ever go through with that gaming build you made a few threads about?  Most of what was in that should do pretty well for editing at home, for mobile/portable editing I'd honestly just get a 2022 macbook with the M1.  The whole adobe suite runs super well on that and you won't have to drag a monitor around.  Seriously look up the adobe benchmarks on the m1 chips compared to alder lake.  Getting that in really well built laptop with a good screen, case, and battery life is gonna serve you way better than hauling an itx build around and wasting 20 minutes on setup every time you wanna use it.

After consideration, Ill be going for a cheaper build, considering that beast was adding up to ~3 grand. Ill be going for it in the future, but righ now I really just need something for photo/video editing and rendering. How does the M1 peform in Blender? Would going with a Mac be better than a Windows Laptop?

*Also I plan on handing this build down when I purchase the more extravagent plan.

Yeah, it'll work. You don't need something fancy, any 2.5" SSD would probably do the job just fine.

It was underwhelming last year but it’s gotten way better now.  You can also just dual boot  windows.  I simply recommended the mac because as far as laptop physical quality (screen, case, battery) goes they’re second to none, and the new M1 pro chips are second to none in multithread performance.  Now that metal GPU support is a thing it should be even better.

So with basically any better 30 series, the price shoots up to 2 grand+. I want the build cost to stay around 1.5-2k with very slight room for margin. This would litterally just be a bit of a budget editing build. Is the 3050/3060 still good? I can get a 3060 like the ASUS 3060

If you're talking about SN750/850 yes, SN750_SE no not really. The NVME drive speed isn't too important unless you have heavy read/write workloads.  But if you can afford going gen 4, go for it.

I was thinking the ASUS 3060 12gb, for the 150% more memory, i could do a 3060ti for $100 more, but is it enough of a payoff for that newer system?

The base doesn't really matter because the PC will boost it to the boost clocks as long as there's enough cooling and power. Also the 12700 has a much better IPC, which will affect performance a lot more than the clock speeds

Our understanding of "significant" differ remarkably.

The benchmarks linked show the i7-12700k has an 18% average performance edge over the i7-11700K. If you look at the various graphs in that article you should note that the i5-12600K actually out performs the i7-11700K in every instance.

In Photoshop the difference is 12%. Once again the i5-12600K outperforms the i7-12700K.

The difference is even more remarkable in Blender, https://www.techpowerup.com/review/intel-core-i9-12900k-alder-lake-12th-gen/6.html

First off, the CPU would have to be the unlocked i5-12600K. The locked versions of that model lack the 4 efficiency cores that do seem to make a difference in productivity work.

For gaming any i5 would be fine. Although more cpu intensive games would benefit from an i7.

For the productivity work it really comes down to the value of your time and how much rendering is done. Only you can make that judgement. But if the system is used every day for 3 years, saving 1 minute a day translates to over 200 hours more productivity.

So, after looking up a couple blender, and adobe forums, it seems like they are more CPU intensive.

So which one would be the better choice? an i7-12700k with a 3050, or a i5 12700k with a 3060?

Could you squeeze an i7-12700 (with B660 motherboard) and RTX 3060 into the budget? (Using a locked CPU would mean a less expensive motherboard and cooling solution without sacrificing much performance.)
