So I'm planning to build a new PC.(Coming from a laptop so no parts are able to be reused) I have a budget of around $900-$1,000(US) and that's not including peripherals. I'm looking for machine that can game. That's it. No video processing or anything of that sort. Just gaming and web browsing. Not really sure where to start, so I'd love some suggestions.

Thanks

Is a copy of Windows needed? Can you not salvage the laptop hdd?

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

Don't care about the laptop HDD and I'll get a copy of Windows. Note: I'd like a 500GB SSD instead of an HDD.

Do not get a 500GB SSD.  You need to focus the majority of your budget on parts that influence performance.  Nothing impacts performance more than the GPU, buy the best GPU you can afford.

Buy this PSU today before it goes back up in price. Corsair CX600M - $45

240GB SSD - $90 This is a really good deal for 240GB.  If you want more than 120GB, get the 240, but for your budget, you need to focus on the best GPU you can afford, not how much SSD storage you can fit in.

If you can somehow get up to $1100, this is going to be the absolute best build for your money.

So this probably sounds like the noobiest question, but how does a peasant construct such a wonder? I'm going with the first build.
