Memory upgrade

Go to solution Solved by YoungBlade,

I would not recommend a memory upgrade for that platform. 16GB is plenty for a 6700 system, and your B250 board doesn't support higher frequency memory anyway. Notice that you can't even get your kit to run at 2400.

I'd recommend saving up more and abandoning your platform in favor of 12th gen Intel. A 12400F and MSI Pro B660M-A board costs about $325. You can bring your current RAM to that platform for now until you have the money to afford to increase the capacity to 32GB and get higher speed memory.

Hello,

my build is:

CPU: I7-6700

GPU: Sapphire RX 580

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Gaming B8 https://www.amazon.com/GIGABYTE-GA-Gaming-B8-Crossfire-Motherboard/dp/B06WP3RTD5?th=1

Memory: Ballistix Sport 2400mhz (but shows on my PC at 2133mhz) 2x8 GB sticks https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Ballistix-Desktop-Gaming-BLS16G4D240FSE/dp/B06XJ6629Z?th=1

I can't quite decide what memory upgrade to get. I would like to upgrade to 32GB for streaming purposes due to some of my streams stuttering and causing some games to be slightly affected with minor frame stutters. Along with Amd freesync not really working anymore.

I have found this: https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-32gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820232791

But I don't think this is quite price to performance efficient.

I'm curious to know if there might be better 32 GB kit to get with a higher clock speed.

Thanks!

Trust me, for streaming, the RAM is the least of your problems. You need more CPU cores.

With your motherboard, you need at least a 7th gen cpu to activate XMP and enable the 2400mhz. Currently you are using the i7 6700 which is a 6th gen cpu. You can only use RAM sticks with 2133mhz. Fortunately, most DD4 have 2133mhz as native speed frequency.

Gotcha, that makes a lot more sense thanks for the info guys I'll definitely be looking into more of this in the future then.

You right I don't know why it didn't cross my mind to look into a cpu and motherboard upgrade and keeping the current memory kit I have. thanks for the info!!
