Getting a 32 GB flash drive, spend an extra $5-10 or does it matter?

Go to solution Solved by Dredgy,

In all reality, it's probably not going to make a difference if you are just after 32GB of stuff you can take with you. Though $10 does seem drastically cheap for a 32GB USB drive. When it comes to flash storage of any kind my loyalty tends to lean towards SanDisk if they are price competitive, and in a search on Newegg for "Sandisk Cruzer 32GB" reveals a few options for $21.69. I *would* recommend the SanDisk Cruzer Facet as I have used it extensively, but it comes at a huge price premium on Newegg (here it was cheaper than everything else) and won't really perform any better than any of the others.

In short, all should be fine.

I was looking on Newegg and eBay, and I saw 32GB flash drives going from $9.99-$24.99, but I don't know much about build quality, speed and such where flash drives are concerned. Should I spend the extra bit or does it really matter? I mean portable 32GB is still portable 32GB in the end, and that's all I really want. :P

Make sure it is from a brand you trust and if it looks like it has good build quality or if it is make with metal go for it, also don't get the ones with moving parts, they break really easy.

Main PC:

ASUS F1A55-M LX, AMD A6-3500, (2x2)gb Kingston HyperX Blu DDR3 1600mhz, Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7200rpm,
Corsair CX430M, Cooler Master Elite 343, Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

Netbook:

Lenovo Ideapad S10-2, Intel Atom N280, (1x1)gb DDR2 667mhz, WD Scorpio Blue 250gb 5400rpm, Zorin OS 9 Lite

I don't know brands very well so I'll add some variety where that's concerned:

PNY @ $16

Kingston @ $14

Silicon Power Blaze @ $16

Patriot @ $25

The Ultra Cheap Toshiba @ $10

Make sure it is from a brand you trust and if it looks like it has good build quality or if it is make with metal go for it, also don't get the ones with moving parts, they break really easy.

That's a good rule of thumb, but I don't know know brands very well with flash drives. Any recommendations on what's good?

This is sort of right but wrong in an important sense.

If you have USB 3.0 ports on you computer make sure that you get USB 3.0.\

If you only have 2.0 ports and 2.0 is cheaper by a lot get 2.0.
