Hello everybody,

I've been using a Synology NAS for 2 years now and the expansion of the storage of this NAS is now very limited for me (only a 2 bay NAS) ...

I was thinking of building a server with an old computer I had laying around ... but then I was thinking a what if I try an Unraid server ?!

So my idea is (and this is why I need advice and comments for this) to turn my actual gaming computer into a server and running a Windows VM for my day to day use.

My setup is the following : https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/list/DjWJfv

The idea is to use the server for :

- Plex server

- Torrent/seedbox

- Kavita comics server

- NAS

and some other dockers.

I'm thinking about adding 1 expansion card like this one https://www.amazon.fr/contrôleur-LSIMegaRAID-9260-8i-LSI00198-RAID0-1-5-6/dp/B07ZVVVS9S?psc=1

and 1 like this one https://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00199165.html just for the VM.

The hard drives will be some toshiba N300 4To for the array/parity + 1 SSD as the cache and I'll like to allocate the 2 NVME for the Windows VM with a passthrough of the GPU.

Do you think it can work and do the job ?

Many thanks in advance for your help !

If youre going to use this as your main PC always on, then why not just use Windows? Then just build your array using hardware RAID (such as the LSI 9260-8i you mentioned, or an LSI 9271-8i) or using Storage Spaces. The  Plex / Torrents / Kavita you could just run in Docker.

Unless you have some need to run a hypervisor underneath, it makes it unnecessarily complicated.
