Do I have CPU bottlneck in 2560x1440 with a Ryzen 9 3900x + RTX 3080 12GB?

I have a 2560x1440 31.5" 165hz 1ms monitor. I just replaced my old videocard to a RTX 3080 12GB version. I have an MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX motherboard (which is fine in a Fractal Design Meshify 2 Compact Airflow case, though it lacks of M.2 SSD slots), 2x16GB 3600 mhz CL18 memory and of course the Ryzen 9 3900x (I use with PBO enabled). My question: in this resolution how big is the bottleneck, if there is any? I was thinkink to move on to an Intel system, I would keep my memory and buy a good Z690 DDR4 motherboard and an Intel Core i7 12700k CPU. Would that transition make my system faster, better in games? I work on my PC too, but I realized that my CPU is underutlized and my GPU does most of the calculation, so my investment into that 12 core CPU wasn't as wise as I thought.

If you’re seeing low CPU utilization and high GPU utilization, that’s the exact opposite of a CPU bottleneck and exactly what you want to see.

There are games where I can see 99% GPU utilization, but there are games where I see 70% GPU utilization. For example Cyberpunk 2077 makes my GPU sweat. The Witcher 3 does this with my CPU.

There's no bottleneck. With a better CPU like the 5900X, 5950X or an Intel 12th gen you'd maybe get a few more frames in games, but that upgrade isn't worth it.

 

For competitive FPS you'd want to limity your FPS so that your GPU doesn't exceed 90% - in order to smooth out the frametimes and thus smoothing the input delay.

If you need as much FPS as possible then yes, it's a "bottleneck". 

 

If you plan to take an advantage of the VRR and stay within your refresh rate, then you're fine.

You're gonna see those numbers from time to time with any setup. As stated, a faster CPU would help some, but it probably won't be life altering.

I went from a 1600X to a 3600 and then a 5900X. Not a single one of those was life altering. XD

 

Going from single core to dual core was, going from HDD to SSD was, going from single monitor to dual was, going from 1080p to 1440p was, from 60 to 144 was.

Guess it depends if girls think a 5900x is hotter than a 1600x. If so, it could be life altering.

that's because cp77 has some neat tech like obviously rtx and better lighting, shadow and higher texture res and witcher 3 is a 7 year old game =)

 

if you can utilize your gpu to the max, as others have stated, it means you're getting full available performance from it aka what you paid for.
