Shopping for UPS...

If for instance you throw in a ballpark 900W for 5 minutes of runtime (enough to shut the machine down safely), you're going to get mostly 1500VA units which are quite common. I've been using a basic APC 1500VA unit for over 10 years and its served me well. I just replaced the battery in it last year.

Just built a new 5900X rig. I currently have everything on surge protection, but I live with a relative who is rather cheap and prefers to fight with things that don't work properly rather than spend a bit more for reliability. What this means for me is that they have a heat pump or thermostat issue ( they think -- I haven't noticed it) that they think means they need to to shut off the breaker, and they invariably hit the wrong one and take down half the house (including my machine). This is in addition to moderately frequent power service interruptions (at least once or twice a month).

And before anyone says I should just get my own place, I am likely high-functioning autistic, with possible Sensory Processing Disorder, likely causing severe respiratory and allergy issues in addition to those typical of autism, so that is not an option for me, as I am unable to maintain a steady job. I actually start testing very soon.

That being said, I need a UPS to prevent damage to my system, and I can't seem to get a straight answer on what I need. PCPartPicker rates my build at just under 450W without the 55" TV I have for display, but these things are rated in VA, not wattage, which is not the same, and there don't seem to be any calculators that can give me a straight answer. If I knew all these factors and formulas these calculators are asking me for, I'd already know the answer, because I would have already been through electrician's training.

Anyone?

As a reference, I have this unit currently that's powering my 5800x/3090 + peripherals + 60W display.

By no means am I saying buy it, just figured I'd point it out. I bought it without knowing anything at Best Buy 10 years ago and as it turned out, its been great. The replacement battery I got for it last year was ~$40 or so.

Wow. I've been looking at stuff maybe 1/3 of that. *smh* I had one years ago for a PC-based CCTV system monitoring a friend's properties, but when the system was decommissioned, the UPS disappeared. Not sure it would have handled this load anyway, I bought it around 2007.

I appreciate the info. On further research, this is not a pure sine model, it is technically a modified sine unit, and I am not sure what is safe to run on it. I went with this one...
