I am building a 5900X system and went with Asus Tuf B550 Plus. Haven't fired it up yet, though. M.2 arrived today, RAM hopefully arrives tomorrow, so hopefully I'll have some temp data and such by the end of the week, as I have an iCUE Commander XT for fan control that I believe will allow me to monitor live temps.

One bit of advice I was given, do not play around with cooling with a 5900. I imagine the 5800 needs similar cooling. I went with a Scythe Mugen 5 air cooler and added three fans over the three the Corsair 4000X case came with.

MSI if you've already got an MSI graphics card so all you need is 1 RGB suite to control it all, I've found that MSI boards have longevity issues, not usually lasting longer than 4-6 years on VRM designs without heatsinks such as that board. Both boards you linked have nekkid VRMs so I'd suggest at least slapping on some passive heatsyncs on either brand.

Unrelated Opinion: ESDF is superior to WASD if you've got a long shift key, you get extra keys in the corner and your finger is closer centered to 1-9 for switching weapons. The bump on the F key makes it super easy to find your way back to ESDF

I plan on upgrading from the ryzen 5 3600 to either the 5800x or the 5900, and I can't decide on which budget motherboard, either the asrock b550m steel legend or the msi b550 gaming plus.

What motherboard do you currently own?  And what do you use your computer for?

Dog, I don't know what to tell ya, but I check your profile and with a 1660, upgrading your CPU from a 3600 will not affect gaming in any way whatsoever.  That things got 12 threads on 7nm silicon, you could be streaming with it right now and it would still be buttery.

I'd save your money and if you absolutely need a better gaming setup, get a faster GPU.  That 3600 can run with pretty much anything on the market.  I'd hate for you to spend hundreds of dollars and have no change in framerate.

I currently have asrock b450m pro4 Rev 2.0

Yeah that board should be fine, used it for my dad's work computer and was able to get 4GHz out of a 1600 with the stock cooler for shits and giggles before clocking it back down to base.  The coolers opn it are pretty well built for the price.

I agree with Chronified on MSI issues -- my current R7-1700 rig is built on an MSI B450M Bazooka, and thanks to MSI and their BS, I have been sitting on this 5900X for about six months. In the same breath as stating the B450M Bazooka supports the 5900X, they admitted to me that their own BIOS update to work with the 5900X could fry the board.

This is after the same board shut down rather than work with a GTX1650S I upgraded to a couple years ago. I kid you not, it booted fine with its original GT1030 (a joke with an eight-core processor), but gave a VGA POST error each and every time I tried booting with the GTX1650S. It finally shut down and had to be sent back to MSI. Took 35-40 days. And since they called themselves 'fixing' it, to call this thing neurotic is being nice. Sorry, but I won't even consider MSI components now.

She's not lying. My current 1700 could do 4K with an RTX3080 rather well. But my case is hardly conducive to cooling, and doesn't allow for upgrading the 500W Channel Well Technology PSU, either. That's why I built a new system.

Lol I’m a guy but it makes me feel pretty hearing that.  Man those RTX 3000 cards are power hogs.  I previously had 2 vegas in my system (sold em to a machine learning guy) so my 1000w PSU will be overkill for the rest of eternity, (6600 now) so I can’t relate to your issue.

I get that, I bought this as a prbuilt to get into pc gaming, I haven't touched my console since I got it. I'm just trying to prep for upgrades in the next couple years

Exactly what I had in mind in spec'ing my new build. Here's the deets. May add a bit more storage and RAM later, but I think storage is more important than RAM at this stage.

OOPSIE.... 🤭

With 1-2 HDDs and an M.2 with six fans, I probably could have gotten away with a 650W, but I got 850W anyway... In true Tony Montana style...

Even then, I'd still go with the 850w.  Those cards can boost way past their TDPs and flirt with 450w, and that 1700 OC'd on all cores can come close to 200 if you're going with a more stability focused tune.  I can never be too confident with some of these PSUs giving their rated wattage (my boyfriend had an HX850 fail from a heavily boosted 1070ti).  The extra ~$30 for those 200 extra watts is worth the peace of mind in that scenario.

Cooling and wattage --- better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
