Solution:

Specs:
MB: ASUS prime b350 plus
CPU: Ryzen 2600
M.2: Kingston A2000 1TB

SSD/HDD from before

First thought was that the MB shares lanes between the m.2 and the SATA ports, but the other disks were connected via SATA 1+2 and from what I can tell m.2 share lanes with 5+6. Just to make sure he switched the other drives to 3+4 with no effect. The next thought I got is to update BIOS, but I would prefer to get there and help him with that part.

Any other thoughts or suggestion of what might be the culprit that might be worth trying before I can physically get there and help with the BIOS update?

Without being able to physically inspect, it sounds like either a) a faulty SSD, or b) a loose/improperly mounted SSD. I've had this issue with 2.5" drives, and it was always a loose or faulty cable, but that isn't a thing with M.2.

Hi!

My nephew has some problems with his PC and I'm trying to help him remotely atm. I helped him build a PC a few years back and he recently decided to upgrade it with an M.2 SSD. Since then he have had problems windows suddenly loosing connection with the disk. After a reboot the disk is sometimes there, sometimes not. It can also just lose the connection mid game, which causes the game to crash or the PC to BSOD. The m.2 t is not the boot drive atm

If he has a secondary M2 slot try that too.

And having him download the newest chipset drivers before UEFI BIOS upgrade can help too.

Also, does event viewer -> windows logs -> system show what errors or critical logs are associated with the disconnect?

Lastly what does crystal disk info show for that drive health?

This review indicates that this particular model can get quite hot under heavy use (90+ degrees). Perhaps this is a factor? Also, does this build possibly have airflow issues that might not affect the other components all that adversely, but the M.2 sort of incinerates itself? On-board mounting seems to be the Achilles' Heel of an M.2, they can't really cool themselves, and being blanketed beneath everything else doesn't help. Perhaps a heat sink would help, or just to test my theory, try putting a fan on it and see if anything changes.

The M.2 is most likely under the Graphics card so could be the case. It is a large case and pretty ventilated from what I remember, but Ill ask him to get crystal disk and keep an eye on temps.

Good idea, I'll walk him through both of those. Thank you for the tips!

Interesting turn around. After updating the chipset the driver is not recognized at all.
