Connecting display through USB

Go to solution Solved by GuiltySpark_,

Ok so there are a few things at play here.

First, he requirement for DP is for using G-Sync on Freesync panels that are G-Sync compatible.

USB Type C, which that laptop does not seem to have, in many cases supports something called DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB Type C. In this instance, a true DP signal is passed through the USB Type C port and to a DP display. In that instance, assuming the specific implementation of the USB Type C port connects the DP signal to the dGPU, that "might" work.

All moot unless I'm wrong and you DO have a Type C connector.

Now, your normal USB3 Type A ports are not connected to your GPU (unless there is some weird specific to that laptop trickery going on, wouldn't put it past them) so there is no way to get a DP signnal from your GPU directly to your monitor.

Now, there are adapters that are essentially extremely low powered 2D GPU's that take your USB3 port and give you a basic video output, however these are in no way connected to your GPU, they show up as their own video output device. Most are based around the DisplayLink technology and I've used quite a few from Plugable. You cannot game on these. https://plugable.com/collections/usb-graphics-adapters

I don't think you're going to get VRR with that display.

Hi,

I own a Dell Inspiron 7567 (i7-7700HQ with a 1050 Ti gpu) and am planning to buy a monitor with AMD freesync. I've heard that freesync works with Nvidia cards but only through display port. Since 7567 only has a HDMI 2.0 port, I was wondering if I plugged the monitor into the laptop through USB 3 with an adapter for display port, would that work and if it did would the USB be connected directly to the dgpu or the igpu. I'm kinda sure that it'll work but I'm not sure if it would have any difference in performance compared to connecting it through HDMI. Has anyone ever tried this, if so are there any issues with doing it like this?

Pretty sure that's a negative.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Thanks for explaining, I guess I'll just stick to HDMI without freesync then.
