Hi there! So for years I’ve been using a Radeon RX Vega 56. It’s what I got as a birthday gift years ago and despite its many flaws it’s served me well. However I have a friend who is willing to give me their old GTX 1080 and I honestly just wondered which is better? Is it worth putting the 1080 in or do I just try and flog the 1080 online for some extra cash?

I can post my pc specs if you’d like too!

The 1080 is better by 10-15% - it performs about the same as a Vega 64. However, when switching from AMD to Nvidia within a similar class of GPU, you need to take into account which games you play, as some games do favor the Vega architecture over Pascal. The same can be true for applications and machine learning.

What are your specs and what games do you play? Also, do you stream or use any GPU acceleration for applications?

Well I don’t have the Vega 64 I only have the Vega 56. So mine will probably run slightly worse than that.

My specs are https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/3KqpbK My CPU cooler is a stock Ryzen one included with the CPU.

I play mostly League of Legends, Civilisation 6, Halo Infinite, just honestly everything from retro games to newer releases. I don’t stream at all unless it’s randomly to my friends on Discord and I don’t really utilise GPU acceleration I just let it do it automatically.

The 1080 is faster. Not by a ton, but it is faster. The Vega 56 also IIRC sells for more since miners.

So what do you recommend replacing my Vega with the 1080 and selling the Vega? How much could I even get for the Vega? I’ve been trying to build a new PC and my dream card is well honestly a 3080 but I’m willing to buy a 3060 Ti or 3070 instead.

Yeah, swap to the 1080. Vega 56's sell on ebay for between $450-550 depending on the card you've got. Plus the 1080 is faster in games and stuff.

Well on the card it says I have the Radeon RX Vega 56 Air Boost 8GB OC

I know it's got the MSI branding on it too.

I know you have the 56. I was using the 64 as a point of reference. The GTX 1080 trades blows with the Vega 64 and is 10-15% faster than the Vega 56.

Since your CPU is the Ryzen 5 1600, you will be susceptible to the Nvidia driver overhead problem. So in CPU limited games, your Vega 56 will perform better than the 1080.

Since you play a wide range of games, this problem will be title specific and so your current configuration will trade blows with the upgraded one. In a title that's good for Nvidia, you might see a 20-30% improvement or in one where your CPU is holding you back, you might see a 20-30% regression.

If you plan to upgrade your CPU to a 3600 or better, then it should be fine, but if you don't plan on a CPU upgrade, then you may want to test it out to make sure this new configuration is an improvement in the titles you play the most.

Well I plan to change my build. I'm wanting to get it ready for a 3060 ti up to a 3080 depending on money and availability.

This is what I plan for it to be then switching either the Vega or 1080 out for a 3060Ti or higher in the future.

I'm also thinking of upgrading my memory but that isn't necessary straight away.
