Depending on what the health of your current drives are, I would put them into the new build for free additional storage. The P2 will give you fast SSD speeds for a low(ish) cost, while the IronWolf will give you extra storage that should last for a little bit. I left a little room in your budget so if you decided you needed more storage you can just buy more drives.

The 5900X is not as fast as the 5950X but it fits the bill and should give you much faster compile times.

Budget (including currency): credit card 🙂

Country:  UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Game Development - so high cpu and drive usage

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):
Current system:

AM3+ FX8320 on a ga-78lmt-usb3 motherboard with 16gig ram
I have a gigabyte rx580 4gb installed (yes I know its throttling shhh)

1 256ssd and 4 4tb hdds

I've been looking into cpu's im liking the 5950x but a nearly £700 its quite alot just for a processor but it would speed up compile times.

motherboards this is where i get lost so many to chose from suggestions and any real world development experience would be greatly appreciated.

this is the route I would go 12700k vs 5950x or 5900x is really no contest for single or multi-threaded workloads

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-core-i7-12700k-vs-amd-ryzen-9-5900x-and-5800x-face-off-intel-rising

CPU, Cooler and Motherboard are all pretty standard, nothing overly flashy but keeps to cheaper DDR4 (there is a performance hit but prices are still nuts for DDR5)

Memory - went a little higher spec for CL14 which gives a much faster first word latency getting closer to DDR5 performance

SSDs - 500GB OS drive is not gen4 but noone can notice gen4 vs gen3 running an OS or loading programs. Compiling would be done on the gen4 980pro which also should have the windows page file to allow any potential run away loops to have plenty of "virtual" ram before crashing the system.

Case - comes with 4 decent fans and lots of airflow so it should balance silent and cool when fully loaded

PSU - tried to keep it in the 50-70% wattage under load range so 750W made sense and Corsair RMx have a long history of being reliable

The best gaming PC is the PC you like to game on, how you like to game on it

@wall03 Just bought near enough the whole list, except for case and psu not available in my region - it was just under £1100 so i got extra ram and more hdds, thank you so much 🙂

Go for the Corsair 275R Airflow or Corsair 4000D Airflow case then. Any Corsair or Seasonic 750W or 850W 80+ Gold fully modular PSU should be more than enough for the build too.

If you plan to upgrade to a 3060Ti/3070 or 6700XT, then a 750W 80+ Gold PSU should be more than fine for that. 850W if it'll be anything more than that, like a 6900XT or 3080/3080Ti.

275R Airflow / 4000D Airflow
