Xbox 360 controller not connecting

I have an original xbox 360 controller and bought the funky cable to plug it into my laptop but it doesnt want to work. Its shown in the device manager and all but the light on it is just flashing constantly pls help.

Iirc you need the wireless dongle. There are no other ways of connecting it to PC.

 

If you bought the wireless dongle, it is most likely not genuine and you have to do this.

If it's the wireless controller no, the cable only provides power for it, I know that sounds dumb as the xbox one controller allows control over USB but not the 360 one.
