Cell phone roaming

I'm going the states tomorrow and I want to take my phone to use things and watch movies, but I heard that if you use your phone in other countries there are massive charges. This only has to do with the data and actual phone calls right, I can still text, play music and all those other things and I wouldn't get charged extra if I completely turned off mobile or even removed my sim card.

Are there any apps you'd recommend that would let me send texts over wifi?

What phone do you have? I think iMessage does that., Otherwise you can use things like WatSap or however you spell it.

 

What carrier?
