Issues with LVM and kernel.

Device is a OrangePi Zero. It runs the latest version of armbian and their own kernel as I didnt want to bother compiling mainline kernel myself and also risk having to set everything up again.

 

I got two USB3.0 HDDs connected to internal USB2.0 headers of the OrangePi Zero, they worked just fine when they were mounted as their own separate mounts but I needed to put them in a logical volume so that I could fix the messy file structure of my shares. I managed to set LVM just fine, drives are fully operational, however under very specific circumstances this results in a behavior I didnt encounter before.

 

Issue arises when I am downloading relatively big torrents to the said LVM volume. I havent managed to pinpoint an exact size BUT anything bigger than 3-4g per file seem to cause LVM volume to be unresponsive and server to have a "ghost" load on it. This load does not appear to be any of the user or system processes. I changed USB ports, I even surface checked the discs and they are all fine. All I can think of is this being some sort of kernel issue.

 

Any command related to the LVM will result in device to become unresponsive, dmesg doesnt have any messages and when device is powered off manually, the next boot takes around 40-50 minutes and after that (usually takes 3-4minutes from cold to all my docker containers to being ready), it boots fine and files are all there.

 

 

Any ideas? How do I go about analyzing this issue? Mind you this device is is located in a very peculiar location and physical access is not that easy.

This makes me wonder if it's a 32-bit addressing issue somewhere in the process.

I suspect this has something to do with USB. Try disabling USB autosuspend. Do you only get this issue with torrents or do you also get it with any file transfer of about that size?

Only on when transmission-daemon is writing to LVM volume. I just copied 40G file to the volume via samba just fine. This device uses uboot, any ideas on how I would go about doing that with uboot? I also think this might be cache related, as I noticed this happens at longer intervals when transmission-dameon is in turtle mode.

I have no clue, there doesn't seem to be much documentation on setting kernel boot flags for uboot.
