mic not working

i think the 3.5mm jack port is broken but my headphones has three cables one for the mic one for the output and one as a usb 

can i use just the usb

I know this is gonna sound stupid but make sure its turned on. Next thing is does the usb have a 3.5 jack on the end of the USB stick? Make sure output audio source is going through the headset. For example I have speakers and a headset I switch between the 2 when I am doing work or gaming.

it does not go on or off it just go on (i think) and the headset have three cables i just want to use the usb cable as an input and input

Try opening your sound control panel and go to the recording tab. Find your headset and try talking through the mic and if a green bar shows up then you know your mic is working.
