I want to remap my "f" keys on my chromebook that has the weird chromebook keys on top to do those thigs.
some would be easy, like the one key with the 3 windows, just switch that to whatever my search key does, that exactly what that key is supposed to do

the search key would also be easy, thatd be capslock.

refresh could just be made f5,

I could map the forward and back buttons to side mouse buttons, thatd do the forward and back thing.

then theres 5 I dont know how to do, brightness(up and down) and volume (up, down, mute)

For the ones I know what to do, I just need a way to do it.

If theres some software that can do this and runs as a service or something that will auto run on boot, or you know how to go the 5 keys I dont know how to do, the help would be nice

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

First and foremost, go check the keyboard settings. You might be able to do what you're looking for through the GUI pretty easily.

You might have a bit of trouble with detecting the keys, though, if it's a unique layout - however chromebooks are common enough, surely someone has figured it out already.

If the GUI doesn't have the options you need, check out xinput - you'll have to read up a bit on what is possible, but you can do quite a lot with just that and the terminal.

Someone asked about remapping mouse buttons - this guide referenced two other programs I haven't messed around with yet, but seem very powerful and straight forward. https://linuxhint.com/map-a-mouse-button-in-linux/

Most programs that deal with mice also deal with keyboards, so it might be as straight-forward as following the guide but replacing a few arguments with your keyboard.

I was able to do some of it with the ubuntu settings, mapping the screenshots to their chromos counterparts, volume key, and the window full screen button.

With some reading i was able to use xdotool to brightness, its a bit laggy, but it does the job

However, the search button isnt registered when i try to map it to something, instead doing the thing that I want the windo menu button to do, though im pretty sure its the "Super" button by testing the shortcuts I see there, so I should be able to map it

ill read up on xinput
