RS170, quick question

I just bought a Senheiser RS170, first time i buy a headset costing more then 50 euros and man I LOVE IT!

I noticed a switch on the back of the receiver thatsays 0db and -8db. is db decibels, like in how loud stuff is? By default it's on -8, and it seems that it doesn't go louder if I switch it but quality goes down a bit. Is that what's supposed to happen?
