advice on build

bob_walter

I have created this list of parts and just wanted to check that it was well balanced and if i should make any changes. It will be used for 1080p gaming at medium to high settings, probably won't be playing the most demanding games.

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/CMkBQD

I was also wondering if it is worth the money to buy an ssd instead of a hard drive for faster load times? Do HDD's affect in game performance or only the amount of time required for the game to start up?

thanks in advance.

I ran it through the overclock calculator, you're looking at 8.56% bottleneck with the CPU and GPU, which should be very acceptable. Assuming I got the right CPU, didn't see the 5600G, only 5600X, may just be a Australia thing.
SSD should mostly affect only load times, don't think it would alter in game performance to any noticeable degree. I would recommend a SSD for your OS, and maybe games you really love/load times matter to you in.

I know I didn't add much, but hope that this helps you! Good luck with your build, if you need anything else feel free to ask here!

Those bottleneck calculator sites are a joke and should be avoided.

I'd get the 5600X instead of the 5600G. If you're buying a GPU anyway, the 5600G isn't really necessary.

And swap that PSU out. That particular one is known to explode sometimes. Refer to this list:

If the power supply's explode wouldn't there be a re-call? or have they fixed them by now.
And the reason im getting the 5600G is because it's on sale where I live.

what OS would you recommend, windows 10 or 11? ( I don't want to go down linux path)

No idea, actually. But since there's plenty of other options why risk getting one of those?

Gamers Nexus did some extensive testing:

And Gigabyte's reaction to all that wasn't exactly promising either:

I understand not wanting to bother with Linux. I would say it's up to you, they are very similar.

You don't. It is impossible to calculate for any pc as it depends what you are doing. Are you gaming at 1080p or 4K ? You running low settings or ultra ? Is the game cpu or gpu intensive ? And so on.

OP's budget is around 1500AUD, not 1500USD

useful information, in that case, this might be a slightly better idea (I just saw $1500)

I'd actually go intel 10th gen for this budget. You can get a 10700f instead which will be better for future games. Also, you tend to be more CPU bound on 1080p so having more CPU is useful. Here's what you can go with:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: Intel Core i7-10700F 2.9 GHz 8-Core Processor  ($359.00 @ PC Byte)
Motherboard: MSI MAG B460M MORTAR WIFI Micro ATX LGA1200 Motherboard  ($119.00 @ Amazon Australia)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory  ($99.00 @ Amazon Australia)
Storage: Western Digital WD_BLACK SN750 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive  ($149.00 @ BPC Technology)
Video Card: GALAX GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6 GB (1-click OC) Video Card  ($679.00 @ Mwave Australia)
Case: Phanteks Eclipse P300A Mesh ATX Mid Tower Case  ($79.00 @ PCCaseGear)
Power Supply: Corsair RM (2021) 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply  ($139.00 @ Amazon Australia)
Total: $1623.00
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

I would stick to 1 TB SSD for now and add more storage down the line. The 1 TB version of drive actually have faster random read/write and better endurance.

You could also save some money by going with 10400f instead.
