Hey everyone,

I'm an aspiring software developer and watch a lot of tutorials every day and spend most of my time using my PC, the problem with that is I can't sit for a very long time as it gets tiring and I lose my focus.

So I'm thinking of a portable screen (preferably budget friendly/nothing too fancy). Something that I can use to work with my computer while on the move around the house.

I've been thinking of a Microsoft Surface as my only option (can connect to my pc using RDP on local network), however, those come with so many things that I don't need and I think it would be much better if all of my budget went into the display itself rather than other stuff.

Most portable displays are just regular displays, they require a computer connected to them with an HDMI or display cable they aren't wireless. Are you looking for something to wirelessly control or display your computer or something that can remote into the computer over the network? Microsoft Surfaces are full on computers, they're just more of a tablet style of laptop. You can use remote desktop on any computer really so even a cheap laptop will do. As for portable displays as far as I know they aren't wireless they have to be connected to a computer or device to output to the display using a cable, most use HDMI or USB-C/thunderbolt. If you're trying to use a wireless connection you will need another computer or device that can remote into your computer, not just a portable display.

If you just want to RDP into your PC to use it, then your best option is an iPad with a keyboard dock. That said, I think your best option is probably to just get a laptop instead.

Used business machines are the best value for this type of thing. They're cheap, built really well with great keyboards, and perform well enough for most software development a beginner would do. I'm a big fan of Thinkpads, so they're what I know to recommend. You want to get one with a quad core, so 8th gen or newer options are your best bet. The T480 is a great value laptop, you can find them for cheap, they're easy to fix, have a great keyboard, and do everything that you'll need them to.

Personally, I'm kinda like you, I do some basic software development, and while I do own a very nice desktop, I do almost all of that from my laptop (personally I own a Thinkpad L13 Gen 2). It's nice to do it on the couch, laying in bed, on the go, etc. A laptop does a great job for this.
