I currently have HD598SE powered by a GSX 1200 and use a desktop Samson mic.  I'm trying to clear clutter so I want to do one of two things.

Add a modmic to the 598s or buy the H6pro headset.  Will there be a sound difference or am I just trading for a microphone.  I will stay open back.

The Game One, PC37X, and PC38X are gaming headsets based on iterations to the HD598 platform.

Going the modmic route is the cheapest. The PC38X is likely to be the "best" all-in-one package. There are no good measurements for the H6Pro out yet, but based on subjective reviews and the fact that it's still in a closed-back based enclosure whereas the others are in the standard open-back Sennheiser housing, and the 38X should use the same driver as the H6, I suspect the others should subjectively sound better as well.

So in your opinion I should get the pc38x ? It was on my list, I leaned towards the h6 for the removable mic but the lack of reviews is holding me back.  Sound quality wise I assume the 38x and my 598 are similar if not the same  and the h6 won't breathe or be as open as the other two because of its design even though they market it as open back.l, correct ?

Always go mod-mic. I haven't seen a "headset" product yet with the durability to match a standard pair of headphones.

Also consider the V-Moda Boom Pro (on sale now at Amazon) which is compatible with a fair few headphones:
