Budget (including currency):  Around 1000€

Country: France

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: This will be a work machine, I'm a software engineer working with compiled languages, so I need all the beef I can put in my CPU. I'll be using Linux.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

I don't need any peripherals, this is only for the tower itself:

  • I want to use the integrated GPU now that they should be powerful enough
  • I'll be using 3 monitors, with a mix of 1440p and 1080p (need to account for 1440p on all three @ 60Hz). I don't want to use VGA, only digital outputs
  • I need 32GB of RAM
  • I need a fast boot/work drive, but don't need more than 1TB, so any NVME drive that can sustain lots of small read/writes will be good.
  • I don't care too much about the case, but if possible it shouldn't be too noisy or too large. I have already built a mini-itx PC, it doesn't scare me especially without a GPU
  • Minor extensibility (like another M.2 an a couple of SATA ports) would be nice
  • Wifi or bluetooth is a plus, but not required.
  • I use an external DAC/AMP for sound, so built-in audio is not really important
  • I care about power consumption a little, so if say the Ryzen solution is a tiny bit slower for half the power of the Intel one, I'll go with it.

I'm using a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th Gen right now with a i7-8550U and 16GB of RAM. The built-in display is too small, I don't have enough RAM and the CPU too slow (single core perf, but particularly not enough cores) for some of the workloads I'm putting it through.

This is the build I came up with : https://ldlc.com/s/L9ER4L

It's the only motherboard I've found with 3 display outputs and the build is a tiny bit expensive. Maybe using this dock https://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00316837.html (which I'm already using for the laptop) can be a solution?

Thanks for your time
