Hey guys I recently encountered an issue that is (most likely) related to my power supply, but I'm not sure about it.

I recently upgraded to a Crosshair VIII dark hero with a 5800X, and replaced my GPU with a 6800XT. I am still holding on to my old 750w corsair RM series PSU, and it worked fine most of the time. However, recently I start to have a weird problem that sometimes when I try to turn on my PC in the morning, I pressed on the power button and the PC wouldn't boot up. I also tried the on-board power button and no luck with that either. The only way I figured out that could temporarily solve this issue is to flip off the power switch on my PSU and then flip it back on, and the PC will turn on after that. But a day or two later, this issue would very likely occur again.

Besides, I sometimes experience stuttering of video/audio for about 3 seconds while I was gaming/ using productivity software or even watching YouTube. This actually happened before I replace my CPU and MoBo (I got the GPU first, then upgraded CPU and MoBo).

In this case do I need to replace my PSU to resolve this issue? According to seasonic and their wattage calculator I need a 850+w PSU. I want to find the actual cause of this issue before I blow another couple hundred bucks on a brand new PSU.

My specs are:

  • Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
  • ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero
  • AMD R7 5800X
  • 2x 16GB Cruicial Ballistix 3600 MT/s
  • ASUS TUF 6800XT
  • Samsung 980 Pro 1T boot drive
  • 3 Seagate 3.5 Inch HDDs
  • 1 Sabrent Rocket 4.0 1T NVMe
  • 1 Samsung 860 EVO 2T SATA SSD
  • Corsair RM750i PSU

I have the most recent BIOS and most recent Windows 10 Updates Installed.

They way over estimate. Every calculator does and is a reason to not use them. I run a 5800x and 6800xt off a 600 watt Corsair SF.

When this happens, do you get any lights or fans on or does everything just stay off?

How many PCIE cables run from your PSU to your GPU? Use 2 if you can. Not one with a pigtail. Sounds like you're having either driver issues or power issues here. 2 cables would help eliminate power issues.

According to seasonic

Are you using the RM or a Seasonic now? I can't quite tell. To me it looks like you have a Corsair and are thinking about a Seasonic if the Corsair ends up being bad?

Are you using any cable extensions or sleeved cables that didn't come from the brand that made your PSU?

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Why is the 5800x so hot?

When this happens, everything stays off. However, the on-board power button is illuminated. USB ports also get power.

I use two separate PCIe power cables for my GPU.

I am currently using a RM750i. But I am thinking about switching to Seasonic if a PSU replacement is needed.

I do not have any cable extensions, every connection from the PSU to a header on the hardware has one continuous cable in between. However, I am using custom cables from cable mod.

Try using the Corsair cables if you've still got them. Don't worry about cable managing them, just run them outside.
