Hey guys,

I know theres probably a lot of people with similar issues, and yes I have read through at least 5 other threads, but I dont see an example that is the same as mine.

This is going to be long-winded, but I want every variable available so someone can maybe see a redherring I dont know about.

I just built a new PC,

Corsair 4000D airflow, 5600X on a 240mm AIO, RTX 3090 FE with thermal pads mod (only the backplate, not the repaste), 32gb (8x4) ram (rated anywhere from 3200-5000), msi x570 gaming plus mb, a corsair 850W power supply, and an absolute rats nest of RGB

I was running for a while on stock everything, I think it has a factory overlock set on auto, but the ram keeps giving me problems (or at least I think its the ram)

The computer runs smooth as butter *until* i attempt any kind of XMP.

It aways defaults to 2666 when XMP is off (verified with CPU-Z).

Both XMP profiles are set to auto 3200 MHZ, and whenever I enable it I get random chrome tab crashes, general unstable preformance (sudden slow downs) and it got so annoying that I just turned XMP off.

I verified that my CPU supports up to 3200 MHZ, and so does the RAM, as well as my motherboard.

I tried running the Prime95 stress test, but almost *immediately* on all 12 tests, it will give an error and say "Not Running" on all of the 12 windows.

Some of them say Fatal Error, some just say error. I tried them on the Blender mode as well as the RAM intensive mode, and its just becoming a problem.
i only encountered BSOD with my 2nd set of 16gb's, but those were defective and since i switched those out, it never BSOD'd again.

Where should I start, or am I a moron who has done something obviously wrong?

Edit: literally 1 minute after posting this, went to play some fortnite wit da bois, literally the moment i jumped i got a system crash, not a BSOD, just a complete crash and it rebooted itself into bios

Next thing I'd do is try different combinations of RAM, starting with matched sticks first, and verifying that each combination works both at stock speed and with 3200MHz XMP enabled. In theory you should be able to narrow down what stick(s) are not able to do that speed (despite their ratings). If even the 5000MHz RAM doesn't work with 3200MHz XMP enabled, then I'd say that points to a defective motherboard or CPU.

I am a relative newbie though, so take my advice with a grain of salt. All of my experience is with DDR3, but I have had issues where I had 2 8Gb modules installed and I went to use the 2 4Gb modules I had left to fill the remaining slots (I was going from 2 4Gb & 2 2Gb to 2 8Gb & 2 4Gb), but the machine (2011 iMac) wouldn't boot, just beeped memory error warnings at me. I paired the 2 8Gb sticks with the 2 2Gb sticks, and everything worked just fine, as did combining the 4s and 2s, but for some reason the 8s and 4s wouldn't work together.

You never specified what ram.
I am assuming that it's Corsair memory.
Corsair memory has been known for not reaching it's rated speeds.

Also do not mix and match memory and set an XMP profile, you're likely to run into issues there.
Best way to know if your memory is 100% stable is to use TM5 with the Antta1 Extreme profile.

I appreciate the feedback! I have tested all 4 sticks under memtest86 as well as random sets of 2, 5 different times, so I am sure I would have found a bad stick by now.

And I appreciate your examples as well, I had the same issues as you did with my last build, and I just let it go because it wasnt a fancy rgb 3090 flex build, so now that ive spent the greenbacks now that it actually matters since i spent the dough

Hey @Jorban! Thanks for the tips!

So my ram is 4x stick of 8GB XPG

***RGB*** <-super important part

3200 MHz ram

all 4 sticks are the same, just purchased 2x, and then the second pair maybe 2 weeks later.

"use TM5 with the Antta1 Extreme profile."

^^ i will definately try this! i have done memtest so far and that came in clear, but ill do this too!

she is best girl!

but i haven't seen this ram around, i am not too sure that i can be much of help with it
but if mem test came back with no errors that should be fine
tm5 is generally just used to see if your memory overclock (xmp) is stable
since you have a ryzen system it might be worth increasing vsoc (system on chip voltage) up to something like 1.15v-1.20v - however you're on 5000 so i am not sure this would solve the issue, might though. i generally only use it when i know fclk is the issue.
it could be that the motherboard/memory is a dud, it happens.
it might help to update bios to the latest, seen some issues with ram and that's fixed it.
it might be worth while to pull two of the sticks out and have a 0101 configuration (1 being a stick placed, 0 being an empty slot)

you know what, I was thinking that myself, to return all 4 sticks and go with 1x 16's to get my 32gb with only 2 sticks

according to youtube itwont affect my preformance too much, and will probabaly be more stable

I hope its not the MB because getting all the cables managed and everything in there cleanly was *painful*

ive never cable managed before, watching the LLT pros do it makes it look like childsplay

I also watched/read multiple troubleshooting guides to no avail 😞

Did you buy 2 of the kit you linked above? Were they bought at the same time or a while apart? You can also try putting the timings in the BIOS manually and see if it gets more stable.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

The specific kit you linked is 3200 mhz. It can run faster, but timings start getting loose and unstable.

They were bought about 2 weeks from eachother, identical kits.

The first kit was fine , the second gave me errors like actual memory failure errors in memtest so i swapped it, and then i got the replacement 2nd pair and did the memtest again and there are no memory errors.

Yes, it is a 3200 and thats all I tried to get it to,  but it will be running fine in XPG at 3200 and then just randomly crash the PC or it will wait until i load a game and go boom.

Its running absolutely fine at 2666 (xpg off), but as soon as i xpg it into 3200 it gives me issues...

so you think it would be better if i read the memory stick and make sure the timings line up, and then make a new profile with said timings and ram speed?

I will definately try that and report back
