Hey all,

I have a pretty large house with a lot of brick walls so I have decided on an Asus AIMesh network setup as I have some existing hardware mixed in with new. What I am mainly wanting to know is should I leave current Asus Router RT-AC5300 as the main router and setup my new RT-AX82U as AIMesh node with an ethernet back-haul or should I use the new router(AX82U) as the main router and use my older router as the node?

Any thoughts and comments are welcome.

Regards

Matt

In such a house, a wireless mesh will struggle in the same way as a single wireless router or extender. But if you have the ability to run ethernet, that will significantly improve wireless performance.

It doesn't really matter which one you set as the primary router. Either should function similarly as router/switch.

Yeah I recently also bought a 3pk of the Asus XD4's, all run with an ethernet backhaul. I am getting around 800mbps down even on my boundary wall. The only reason I asked about which one should be primary is I saw a video that you should use the most powerful router as the main router but in this case I am not sure which device that is The older AC5300 has 1GB Ram where the newer AX82U only has 512MB so it makes me unsure.

I doubt whether there will be a difference between the 2 since they're some of Asus' "high-end" wireless routers.

But if you're still unsure, you have the ability to test with what you have and switch around if you find anything unusual.

Since you seem to be converting to WiFi 6 (AX), maybe use the RT-AC5300 as the primary router (good that it has more RAM), while keeping the AX82U with XD4s as APs with ethernet uplinks to the RT-AC5300.
