Let me explain my logic a little:

Both builds will include a GTX 650ti Boost, or another card in the 760 range, and would  only need to run minecraft, dota, planetside 2, battlefield, and other lightweights at decent settings at 1080p.

The first Intel build has a strong motherboard, with an adequate cpu, opening the option to upgrade to an unlocked i5/i7 later on; where the second build will have a decent CPU and decent motherboard that will not be upgraded, only replaced if an upgrade is needed. The Pentium also has stronger cores, which will perform better in older games, as well as single or dual threaded games.

Everything else would be similar, a 50 dollar case, 50-60 dollar power supply, 60-70 dollars worth of 8GB ram, 60 dollar WD Blue HDD, and any necessary extension or connector cables. I would most likely run Windows 8 and wait for a sale (and do researching on how to buy it, I have only bought keys in the past to activate). It would be nice to have a smaller system, but ATX is acceptable.

More cores almost never means better performance. It's better to get better threaded better performing cores rather than a bunch of shitty ones. Remember quantity over quality.

i know about the threading and stuff but when it comes down to price to performance in this case amds a better option

AMD might usually be the better option. However you cannot base your build solely off CPU. I believe option 1 would be a better choice as it has a much better motherboard.

However I would likely go with the first option. However go with an I3-4130 CPU.

I vote i3. I feel like AMD is either 8320/8350 or go home. Though you'd better be stepping it up in a few months in terms of CPU in order to live up to that board. You literally can't do anything with that CPU + mobo combo in terms of pushing it; i3s aren't even partially unlocked. Why is it mATX in an ATX case?

But would it be worth it in the long run? The last time I went with a decent AMD/Cheap board to keep in budget, I highly regretted it because there was no upgrade path.

It does, but again, I would have the option to upgrade to whatever cpu goes on sale, where as the 6300 is one of the best AMD CPUs.

Whats the advantage of going from an i3 to an i5/7, when I can save money from just getting a pentium?

I agree, it would be a waste to not upgrade that board. But I know there will be a sale, even if I have to wait for BF. As I posted, I just included parts within the price range, because they take much longer to decide to get.

the motherboard you selected is am3 and thats the most up to date amd socket so if you ever want to drop a 8320/8350 in there you will be able to

Only some of the higher end motherboards actually support an 8 core CPU, even if it says it on the box. I figured this out from my first build, so I would have to put another 40-50 into a board to plan for an upgrade, which can be the same price of upgrading to an i3.
