Hi guys!

 Thanks for the recent help.

I have an i9-10850k in mind that a friend has offered.

I am looking at memory and it there are several people saying it will take only 2933mghz and I've seen some that say more.

What's the right one? Are they backwards compatible? Say, if i get ddr4 4400mghz will it be ok?

Also, ive seen some that recommend and some that do NOT for Optane memory to run in conjunction with my new ssd AND the memory.. is it a good idea?

(Once again, I'm building a system for the first time)

 Thanks guys!

I'd take the 10850k, given that you're getting a good deal on it.

As for memory, 2933MHz is all it's rated for, but 98% of the time it can run faster speeds. It's just that anything higher than that is considered an overclock and not guaranteed to work. DDR4 is 4400MHz might work, but I'd give the odds that it would about 50%, and it depends on if your motherboard supports it (B460 and a few other chipsets do not support anything above 2933MHz). If you do get that high speed memory, you can always lower the speed if it doesn't run out of the box, say 3800MHz.

As for Optane, it depends on what you're using it for. If you're using it as a cache drive, it won't really make a difference and not worth the cost. I don't know what you mean in regards to and the memory, so I can't comment on that. Optane usually takes a specific workload in order to make it worth it, so it might not be worth investing in it if you don't already have some.

What price and does it include anything else?

Youre limited to 2933mhz out of the box if youre in the B460 and H series chipset. The rest of the 10th and 11th gen chipsets (Z490, B560, Z590) doesnt have this limitation and you can run XMP or manual RAM overclock on it.

As in what? In memory it doesnt make sense because this platform only supports DDR4. In chipset as i stated, 10th and 11th gen are interchangeable with caveat being that 10th gen below Z board cant activate XMP.

The price is $300 still in a sealed box. No fan.

So I'm looking for a z series lga1200 motherboard if i want to reach the higher speeds?

I was asking if the newer ddr4 4000 would go back to the lower speeds if the motherboard would support it.

This is my first build as i have always bought off the shelf. Not gaming as of yet, but will be doing a LOT of Ps and video editing at home as a side business.

Thanks for any and all help.

Thanks for the help, this answered quit a bit.

I'm a little lost as my last comp gave out and was a i7 3770.

My friend has the i9 for $300... so i thought this might be the building block i need to start with.

I'm looking to build this one as budget will allow and be able to use it for a couple of years.

The optane option was 16gb and was $13, so i was just wondering about it since the mobo I'm looking at it boasts it will run it and i was curious, i figured for the price of an Arby's meal, it might have been worth it. 🤷‍♂️

 Thank you so much.

This will all come down to what your budget actually is. $300 for a 10850k is a pretty decent deal, and if you can build the rest of your system out for within your budget with it, you might as well get it. The system I would mostly recommend with this CPU is this:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/zH2nbh

Granted, this would change with your budget, either going up or down, but this is a pretty good baseline for where to start. You will notice I didn't add storage or a video card. Storage I figure you can carry over from your 3770 build. The video card is going to be the hardest part to get now, since everything new is overpriced or out of stock, and everything on the used market is overpriced. Something like a 3070 would be a great pairing for this build, but they are basically impossible to find for a good price, so I'll let you handle that, either by carrying over your previous GPU assuming it's not dead, using the iGPU for a few months, or getting lucky scoring a card.

As for Optane, if you're going to use a hard drive, sure why not, but otherwise I wouldn't bother, as you would have basically no performance difference.

That's awesome! Thank you for ALL THIS!

Yes, i have an 800w Tagan PSU, a RX570 GPU left over. The only thing I forsee trouble with is, i HAVE to have a bay for a bluray burner for some of my work.

However i have already added the others you have recommended and after i have the processor in hand, tomorrow,  i will start buying these items.

However, i see that you recommend only 16gb, will this be enough for rendering?

I'm unsure as i am just coming off the ddr3 ram...

 Thanks again!!

I missed where you said you were doing mainly video editing and photoshop, in which case yes you want to get 32GB+ of memory. I assumed you were mainly gaming and possibly streaming like most people on here, where in that scenario 16GB is usually enough.

As for a case with a bluray drive, there aren't many left on the market, but some do exist. I'd get something either from Fractal Design's Define line-up, or the Phanteks Enthoo Pro.

Personally I'd go for the Enthoo, but I'm a bit of a Phanteks fanboy, so take that for what you will.

That is awesome. Thanks for the advicem i just got home. I got the sealed CPU and a brand new 750w PSU he had all for $350...

Now for the parts you mentioned.

I know the RX570 8gb isnt new, but it should run PS ok, i think.

So I should look for the same Ram You mentioned,  just in 32gb, yes?

 Thank you for the help!
